1600 mk1 gti introduction

hi all
i have the mk1 1600 gti .and its an on going project at the moment .now here is where im getting stuck its the 1982 1.6.mars red .but could anyone help with the history as all i keep seeing is the 1.8 so could someone help with the year as to when the 1.6  finished production and the 1.8 took over.

Think it was for the '83 model year in the late summer of '82 when the factory annual change over took place.

My GTI is a 1.8 with an early-ish DX engine number is full of parts dated in the summer months of 1982 although it wasn't registered until Feb 1983.

So all X-regs (to July '82) should be 1.6, early Ys (from Aug '82) could be either and later Ys (from autumn/winter 82/83?) and A-regs will all be 1.8s

As with many cars, there would of been some made and in a docks somewhere waiting to be registered so I guess that's why there is a slight difference when a model changes.
