Hi All. Did anyone watch Car SOS tonight with the Astra GTE ? It was first aired last year but I'd never seen that episode before. My stupid TiVo box turned over in the last few minutes and I missed the results of the race, mk1 gti against mk1 Astra. Anyone know who won? Thanks in advance

I just got really excited when my iPad went ding but still no answer and now you're also curious lol. Was a good episode to be fair. Worthy story and they did a superb job on the gte (as you'd expect). All4 only have series one and series 4 available. Hopefully it'll get repeated again at some point

The Golf Gti was always the slower of the GT cars around when new but they are the better built cars.

And the far better looking one of the bunch too. Although the gte in black did look pretty smart, wouldn't swop my mk1 for one though lol

All of those MK1 Astra's with the OHC engine were quick, I had a couple back in the day. A 1.3 S that would keep up with XR3i's up to the 90mph mark and a 1.6S that was an XR3i beater! The only let down was the handling on the Astra compared to an XR3i. Never raced a GTI Golf though. I always wanted a GTE but never had one and I was considering one when I bought my MK1 Golf. I still want a GTE but I wouldn't swap it for the Golf, I would have to have as well as the Golf !
Performance wise, I'm surprised the GTE beat it, those GTE's were quick but also heavier than the Golf and with only an extra 3 BHP. That said, the Astra is a generation newer than the Golf and the engine and fuel injection were newer technology.

The Golf was much slower where it mattered - falling to pieces and entering an early grave, you only see a handful of Astras about now so that to me is the answer to what was best. Vauxhall could only offer the Chevette as competition when the Golf as first born.

Must admit though back in the day I did have a desire for an All White GTE

I'd have to go for the 5 door Vauxhall. I also think it's more my style than the 3 door. Wouldn't swop either for my veedubs though and now off to rinse my mouth with soap and water for contemplating a Vauxhall over a Volkswagen lol

Cars in the 80's and 90's had soul. Granted, they didn't usually have any wheel arches after 12 months (had both GTE and GLi - both rotted out), but were fun. MG Metro was a go-kart, Viva I only needed the house keys to open and start, Quattro GT drank fuel (no wheel arches as well - for an Audi?) and ex-plod Senators did 299,973 miles before failing a MOT. Love the Lotus Carlton - car porn.

If it's any consolation Mk1Hev, the Carlton has Lotus badges where the Vauxhall ones would normally be…:)

I quite fancy a Monaro as well, but i think I'd have to 'badge engineer' that too, swapping the Vauxhall ones for Holden.
