factory options

hi i have just purchased a 1982 mk1 1600 that i aim with the help of my father to get back on the road again .its been in dry storage for over ten years an so far its in good shape.with the car i was also given a lot of spares, doors boot front grill etc but this is where my issue ls .can any one point me in the direction as to what was standard and what was an optional extra or what has been fitted with after market items to my golf.
i have a spare twin light front grill but was that for this car.the centre console has one dial but i have seen some that have three .to me there are many variations of this car looking at pictures and videos etc.
so i would just like to get it as close as possible to the original .i have a full set of BBS wheels are these standard.if you could help it would be appreciated
many thanks

I take it you are referring to a GTI rather than a 1600 GL/GLS.

The twin light grille will have been an aftermarket or dealer accessory, as long as you have the digital clock in the dashboard, which you should have unless you have a very late registered early car - it can happen - then no dials in the centre console, just will have been a single blanking plate accross all three hole cut outs.

Wheels will have been tarantulas 13inch, the BBS we could do with seeing a picture to establish if they are a genuine period accessory or a later type of wheel.

Tinted glass and factory steel sliding sunroofs were options.

Just need to add, 82-83 was a period when many people bought in cars from Germany expecially as personal imports so can throw up some strange non uk specs - eg colours, steel wheels, different colour interiors.

yes sorry its the GTI in mars red .it was first registered on the 01/02/82 . IMG_20161122_121610.jpg as you can see by the picture at the moment its a mess but its a good starting point.
another thing is the sunroof the one i have has a chrome trim around it but looks very aftermarket as most i have seen look flush with the roof is this the case
many thanks for the reply

Yes it's an aftermarket one as looking at the picture you can just see it but a better picture will help.

The spirit level holding the boot open is also an optional extra, I had a bit of wood and then an umbrella holding my boot open for a few years!  :lol:Take some more pictures and post them up as that tells us alot about the car.
Is there not a paper sticker in the boot as that tells you the engine, paint code, and extra etc fitted to the car from new?
Do you have an original owners manual as some times there is a label in there with the info on?

Do you cars come with the sticker in the trunk? Should have a sheet with all the option codes then you can decode online!

yes the spirit level is the posh version as the stick broke.the sunroof has a rubbish chrome effect trim but its not a sliding one it just tilts upwards that's it .to me it just looks very tacky and cheap. The wheels aren't BBS, possibly some thing like MSW's weren't factory or dealer options.

Glass sunroofs were a dealer option, usually bybBritax which had quite a good flush fit, but there were loads of companies in the 80s offering aftermarket fitments.

Back in the 80's us VW Dealers could get a standard Britax glass sunroof fitted for as little as £50.

We didn't sell it for that price of course, anywhere between £150 and  £200. As they were so popular back then we'd even fit them to used cars that were hard to shift or offer one to a potential buyer to close a deal. In the summer months we could easily do 20 -30 sunroofs a month.

Darn it, another trade secret given away! 😉😂😊👍

I've always got by with Haynes. A good book on K-Jet is 'Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management' by Charles O. Probst.
Personally I avoid buying any aftermarket spares described as a 'kit' or anything ending in 'ane'.

I've read on here of both being done successfully.
I'd like to search the posts for you but I don't think this database goes back that far.

One guy who was a professional metal worker even cut the roof off a scrapper, then cut out the piece he wanted and welded it in the whole. Once prepared and painted you would swear the car had never had a sunroof!  :o

But I think these types of jobs are for pros and not for the faint hearted like me.
