Cabriolet Roof Seal Gasket?

Post

Leak from where roof seals meet - missing gasket?

I have purchased a 1987 Golf MK1 Cabriolet in good condition apart from a few roof issues, as follows (the roof was renewed prior to me purchasing the car): -

1. The 2 roof struts are with the car but are not fitted - where can I get the circlips and washers to fit the struts?

2. The 2 loops are missing off the bottom edge of the roof which the cover is hooked to.  My roof is black - where could I get 2 x loops? 2018-07-10 09.03.26.jpg

3. The headling has cut through at the front edge where is meets the screwed on metal strip - is there an easy fix for this without replacing the headlining? 2018-07-15 23.17.35.jpg

4. The cover for the roof has one of the elasticated clips missing off it - can the elasticated clips be purchased anywhere? 2018-07-15 12.54.03.jpg

5. The roof seems to seal okay but it sits up slightly as one point above the windscreen on the drivers side - what could be the reason for this and how can it be fixed? 2018-07-15 00.24.02.jpg

6. The hood does now appear to sit correctly at the corner where it meets the rear side window - is this an easy fix for someone like me who is mechanically competitent? 2018-07-15 00.14.22.jpg

I have removed the rear window and found that it was fitted without any staples being used to fit the roof to the window frame.  I will staple it and refit the window and seal the window rubber with silicone.

Any help with the above will be appreciated (sorry for all of the questions).

Dealership, ebay, vw heritage werks34.
There are 3 parts per end on each strut.
N 0154013 Washer
171827625 compensating Piece Rubber end cap
N 90095603 Washer (clip)

2. The 2 loops are missing off the bottom edge of the roof which the cover is hooked to.  My roof is black - where could I get 2 x loops?

The Boot loops come with the top kit, so you would have to have them made.  To install them you have to remove the rear cable from one side or the other then carefully remove it from the inside of the car and then carefully pull it out of the top and cable tray, you install it so they are usually at the corners of the top where the boot lines are.

They aren't needed to hold the boot cover on the top, and well if your cable wasn't new but re-used, and you don't know who put it on, well you are risking the cable (they break really easily if used.) to do that…. I would leave it be until replacement is warranted of the whole top.

3. The headling has cut through at the front edge where is meets the screwed on metal strip - is there an easy fix for this without replacing the headlining? 2018-07-15 23.17.35.jpg

You can try to re-stretch it to the frame bar, you have to remove the 8 to 10 screws that fasten the retainer bar
to the frame,  Pull it over the frame and below the to the edge of the frame then reattach the bar.  You may have to take the 2 screws that hold the headliner to the frame to accomplish this… then possibly trim… you won't know until you get the bar off and the frame stretched.

It is best to go to a fabric store and buy new elastic strapping, and a Snap kit,  You sew the elastic to the boot cover, then you measure it to length -1/2 inch the length doesn't include the 1 inch fold over at the bottom that you will use the Snap kit on.

they make different styles of kits, here is one at walmart.

There are a lot of possibilities for that including but not limited to:
Bent frame
J-hook needs to be tightened,
Front material edge isn't at the proper position.
I will post some links at the bottom..

6. The hood does now appear to sit correctly at the corner where it meets the rear side window - is this an easy fix for someone like me who is mechanically competitent? 2018-07-15 00.14.22.jpg

Even I have issues with that as each install is a custom fitment as no 2 tops or frames are the same. I personally would leave it be if it isn't leaking.

I have removed the rear window and found that it was fitted without any staples being used to fit the roof to the window frame.  I will staple it and refit the window and seal the window rubber with silicone.

Wow, that is really an eyeopener as on most tops that I have replaced and that is quite a few, there are about a half a bazillion staples to remove.  (ok 180-200) the issue is that you need Stainless Steel staples and a really really good hand stapler, or Pneumatic stapler, then you have to make sure that your staples are seated fully.

Pulling the Fabric to hold it to the frame may be a bit hard to do,,, For sealant, make sure that your rubber seal is clean and that all the finger wipers can engage.  I only use silicone to cover the staples. never to seal the gasket to the top.

Any help with the above will be appreciated (sorry for all of the questions).

Chortle is another member that does tops for a living, I do it as a hobby… He may chime in with more things to consider…. If you read all the above links you will find most of your answers if not all of them…

OBTW to replace a headliner, you have to remove all 3 layers of the top. if you can't stretch the one back into poition.
