Wheel nut bolts for a set of standard BBS Sportline wheels

Post

What size are they?

As the post suggests, I'm looking for info about the wheels nut bolts for the following.

As you can see from my profile, my Golf has a none standard set of 15" wheels.
I bought these wheels last year but with no wheels nuts. They are bog standard off a 'Sportsline'.

So to be safe, I would like to know there spec so I can try to buy a set before spring comes.
If anyone has a set they want to sell please get in touch .

Also, where can I buy a set of four good quality locking wheel nuts that would l@@k right on these wheels?
I will not be changing the color.

Thanks as always for any help on this one!

Mike :)

Mike just check eBay, I can't quite rembet the size.
Locking nuts are a matter of taste and I just have all normal bolts with black nut covers which then hides them in against the black wheel.

Thanks Massbad69,

As always you come up with the goods!   .

Regarding the locking nuts, are you not concerned that some Rat is going to whip them off?

Not very common nowadays Mike tbh and my car is always garaged too.

I just like the black caps hiding the silver bolts against the black wheels and the black cap won't fit over a locking wheel nut.

Hi Mate,

By chance I came across a website in France of all places selling the original VW black wheel nut caps for 0.90 Cent a piece so I ordered 20.
Did have a quick look on Mugsbay and there was a place selling non-originals for slightly less but what the heck!

be aware that on early cars steel wheels used shorter bolts than alloys! the spec you want are m12x1.5x23.5mm. most mk2 golf have the right ones regardless of alloy or steel wheels, same with mk3 golf 4 stud. if it helps the part number is 3a0 601 139

General question.
Has anyone tried powder coating the wheel nut heads?

If so with what success or is it just a non starter?

Mike.  :)

i dont see why you couldnt, only issues i can think of is that the paint cant be too thick otherwise the whell brace wont fit any more, and you would want the coating to be pretty tough else it'll chip off

My thoughts exactly!
The wheel brace would chip it off.

Oh well, it was a nice thought!

You might need a 18mm spanner…. :)

2 coats of Satin Black enamel and one coat of Satin clear, and the bolts are still17mm and you don't see them. or Flat and satin but the look is almost oem….in color.

First thing you will need to do is a stud conversion.

Some of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wheel-Stud-Conversion-Kit-VW-Lupo-Golf-Mk1-Mk2-Polo-M12x1-5-60mm-Length-NEW-/152139619916

or these

http://www.elite-d.co.uk/race-wheel-stud-conversion-kit-m12-x-1-5-early-volkswagen-5-stud-kit/

You'll need 16 at least obviously.

Stick 2 nuts on the long end, some thread on the short end and wind them in. Ideally up to the torque setting of the wheel nuts (65 if I remember correctly).

Allow the thread lock to go off and then wheel, followed by nut.

Couple of things to be careful of though.

1, If the stud conversion studs aren't massively hard or the shoulder (the bit between the two threads isn't particularly big) then you can wind it in too far when attempting to torque them up. Check the distances and go slow. If you can't torque them up it doesn't really matter as the torque will come when the wheel goes on.

2, Make sure that you measure the thickness of the wheel you are using and ensure that the nut IS CONTACTING the wheel properly and isn't just running out of thread and ending on the end of the stud. Obviously if it's doing this then youor wheel isn't tight.

3, Make sure you get the right end on the nuts for the wheels you will be using. The end that goes into the wheel will have to be wheel specific. Usually a 60 degree taper, BUT DOUBLE CHECK!!!!!!!!

4, If you change your wheels you might need another set of nuts.

5, After installing them for the first time, keep checking the torque of the nuts. I had a rogue stud that stripped it's thread a bit, just enough to not allow the the correct torque to be maintained.

Just think your way through it all, remember these are the only things that stop your wheels coming off. Unless you are 100% confident, don't do it

Any more questions give me a yell

Probably the same double take that I did when I realized it was over 12 months since I took my wheels off the car….. The lug bolts had corroded to the wheels, and took a little more umph to get it off.

So I decided that I had forgotten the Never-Seize on the threads on a couple…..
