which brakes to put on my mk1 GTI

i need help on which brakes to use to upgrade my mk1 brakes.

i basically got a mk1 not to long ago, ive had a few mk1's before hand and i know that the brakes :ocf_emoticons__BangHead: aren't the best. i want to change/upgrade my brakes both front and rear (mostly rear) but i'm not too sure which brakes i should go for, or which brakes can fit the mk1, i need help in which brakes i should go for and if i should change both front and rear brakes or just the rear drum brakes.

Personally I would swap the servo and master cylinder setup for a mk2 16v 9" servo and 22mm master cylinder as that ups the breaking quite a fair bit! 

I run 239's on the front at the minute (have 280's when I pull my finger out) and mk2 rear caliper setup with a bias valve to lower the pressure to the back. But is leave the drums for now and just do the servo see how you feel with that.

The 280mm setup seems popular with talk of the Vauxhall discs fitting as well to keep the costs down.

Depends on your budget really mate. :)

As Smudge says how much do you want to spend,how big do you want to go?

I am running Autocavan Superbrake Bar,Bias Pedal Box, 280mm discs and std GTI calipers on TSR adaptors(and soon to be Audi S2 2-pot calipers )at the front and MK4 Golf calipers at the rear which works very well!! :lol:

Speeding is like masturbation, everyone does it ,but it's not something you should record and put on the internet!!

I'm running MK2 servo and master with Wilwood 4 piston calipers and discs at the front with MK2 discs with MK3 calipers at the rear. All with Goodridge hoses.

Should stop me pretty well I am hoping.

Oh and I am going to be using 2 x brake pressure reducing valves for the rear. :)

Interested to know how this works for you lad as I found 2 in my collection of bits il never use haha. 

If you wanna stop dead though as said above by both, 280's and rear discs is the way to go.

I will of course update my build thread when I get the brakes sorted and she is on the road. They're the type that plug into the servo, onve for each side :)

There's been a long standing debate about rear discs and whether or not they are actually better than drums on the MK1 and if they're needed or just for asthetics etc etc.

They were on eBay mate at £9.00 each recently. The seller had 4 but I think they have all gone now :)

Discs are prone to locking the rear wheels apparently if not set up properly  :o  :o

Must admit my rears are nigh on locked out on my bias valve ,at MOT time its so light the wheels always lock and bounce out the rollers!!!! :lol:

I have uprated EBC 256mm discs and green stuff pads on front, braided brake lines, 9" servo and 22mm mc, with drums at the rear and thats plenty on a 160bhp 2.0 16v.

beware of discs on the back, often the cause for lock ups and spins. so make sure you read about whats available, and also what you really need.

Don't need discs on the rear, the backend goes very light under heavy braking, but I always fit them for aesthetic/maintenance reasons

Rear brakes account for about 7% of the braking on a car so whilst it is an improvement as its a fact that discs are better than drums it will only be a slight overall improvement.

So I would say your better spending your cash on the front. The servo and m/c is a must and then either change the entire front brakes with callipers and discs and pads or you can get spacers to use bigger discs with the original callipers. 

I have just changed my servo and did this in user am hour. If you do follow the guide on here but I took the brake bar off entirely as it makes the servo removal much easier.

Thank you all for commenting, then I'll be putting mk2 16v 9" and the 22mm or the 280's setup only on the front. I'll keep you guys updated with the project.  :thumbs:

Are there any other models that have the 22mm cylinder and 9" servo fitted?  Checked out vagcat for gti 16v servo 192612107A and it says its on a few jetta/passat mid to late 80s.  However I found a 22mm cylinder for the gti on ebay that says it fits all sorts of seat/vw upto 1999.  It'd make them easier to find and cheaper if there are some others from mid nineties that fit.

I got a new new repro m/c from VW heritage as I thought the seals may be a little worn on a 20 year old one. Was under £40 delivered for the m/c bud.

Yeah i reached the same decision on the m/c.  For 40 quid I'd rather not get an old one.  On the look out for a 9" servo now.
