My '84 Atlas Grey Campaign Partial Resto! UPDATE PAGE 5

Well finally bit the bullit and decided to take the grinder to the car! Here is what the car looked like prior to 'Spanner Time!'  :D

And here are some of the bad points.

Rusty copy part wings

Cracked badly repaired arches

Also the front panel had rusted beyond repair (another crappy copy part) and twisted. So that was the 1st thing to go!

Here is the new VAG panel as supplied by GPC. I have later been informed that its a cabrio part but Im not fussed.

Here is the twisted junk I cut off the car.

And these cracks were on the panel before removal.

The front of my car at the mo! Hope it all goes back together.  :?

Looked good before you stripped it  8O

It's amazing what a good paint job can cover . Best of luck with it , will it be standard or slightly modified on completion ?

Cheers…………

Thanks! It is already quite heavily modded and will stay like that. I was near standard when i bought it but im not bothered bout keepin this one standard. The list of mods is quite large but nothing drastic when it comes to aesthetics. Just simple tweeks to suit my taste. I know most of this website is dedicated to factory mk1's but it seems to have one of the best mk1 restoration sections i have come across and has helped me loads!  :D

Engine & transmission:
1.8 16v soon to be 2.0 9A
Customed flowed head (Completed by a friend)
2nd exhaust cam used as an inlet cam
1600 FD code gearbox with Quaife torque biasing diff
Helix organic plate clutch
Supersprint group A exhaust system soon to be complemented by a Supersprint manifold
K-jet optimisation
Power & torque: 169bhp & 134lbft Will be up over 180bhp and 150lbft after 2.0L.

Suspension & Brakes:
Polybushed all round inc engine front engine mount
H&R coilovers
23mm Neuspeed front ARB
28mm ABD rear ARB
256mm 16v brembo front discs with pagid pads
16v rear disc conversion
5.1 brake fluid with 22mm master cylinder and mk2 servo

Interior:
Standard & wear free
Isotta steering wheel and custom VW Motorsport gear knob
Willians 4-point harness with FIA approved release all in black

Exterior:
Factory Atlas grey paint
Debadged and decals removed
Red crystal tail lights
Single lamp front
Smoked front indicators
Standard black trim & bumpers
Chrome early door handles
Beesting arieal already fitted but will delete
BBS RS001 three peice split rims with gold centres

I carry out nearly all the work myself. The only thing I have paid to get done is the flowed head. Well, hope to have it painted before the year is up.  8O  :D

Looks like some fun and in my mind tastefully done except for the crystal light (never been a fan)

Keep us updated  :D

Hey Zak. Come round when ever you want to see whats being done and how. Im using a 2.25" angle grinder with metal cutting discs. You can buy super fine ones from body shops.

Cool might have to take you up on that, hows the welding going? im thinking about buying a welder so i can undertake the work myself 8O

Hehe! The welding is coming along. I have some professional welders here at work who have given me some tutorials and tips. A bit of practice and alot of research on techniques has helped. This site is full of knowledge.

George you should take a peek you know - the longer you leave it the worse it will get..... its good to get it before it creeps too far over the lip of the arch.. less metal to remove... :D
