Correct kit for Gear linkage rebuild on '87 GTI Convertible

Post

Hi Folks - new to the forum, so 1st post..

We've just bought an '87 GTI convertible which has a gear change like a wooden spoon in a bowl of porridge.
I've done a search on here and read a how to and a few other comments on what needs to be done and I'm sure that rebushing / fitting a gear lever repair kit will do the job (had plenty of old dubs with similar issues in the past).
However I'm a bit confused as to what kit I need. The car is an 87 and has a 1.8 engine with a 5 speed box. Having read a write up it said to make sure that you get the MK1 kit as the MK2 is slightly different. However as the car is a later model Karmann and has the 5 speed box, should I go for a mk2 kit, or stick with the kit designed for mk1's?

Just want to be sure as, not sure if the later convertibles carry over the original or inherit the mk2 stuff.

GSF show this for a mk1: GEAR LEVER REPAIR KIT
and these for a mk 2: GEAR LEVER REPAIR KIT

Thanks for clarifying

Hi Matt and welcome.
Definitely need the Mk1 kit, the cabbies stayed the same right up until 1993 when they ceased production.
Take a look at our Club Sponsor - Classic-VW
Here is the complete kit - https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk1-golf-5-speed-total-gear-linkage-rebuild-kit-caddy-scirocco-jetta-5436-p.asp
But Mark does everything that you will need.

Cool - thanks for clarifying that. Would you suggest replacing the whole lot then, Not just the bushes?

I suspect after 30+ years it could all do with a refresh tbh.
Replacing it all will ensure that all the links are tight and no chance of play, at least.
Will get it ordered.

Order the short shifter and weighted billet from Missinglinkz and you will love the quickness and firmness it gives you.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
