Looking for rear coil springs as OEM replacement

Post

Hello All,

This is my first post here :)  Last year I bought our family a 1989 Cabriolet Base. It is red with a white top and interior, 119k miles and is a lot of fun even though she has some issues.  I live in the US and my state requires yearly safety inspections.  Turns out I have two broken coil springs in the rear.

I have found many options to replace my springs and struts with coil overs but I am hoping to keep a stock ride height.

The closest I have come to a direct replacement is an earlier GTI spring set but I have read they are softer and not the right spec.  This is what I found :  https://www.vwheritage.com/171511105h-rear-suspension-coil-spring-vw-spare   ( I am ok shipping from the UK if that is the best option)

So does anyone know the spec for Cabriolet rear springs?  How much are they different from the GTI springs.  Or if you know somewhere I can get the actual Cabriolet rear springs?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome,

I live in the States as well and drive Cabbies.

The VW springs are coded by dots yep colored dots on the coils.  Different springs for different models.

GAP before they went Out of business used to sell them each. but then again they went one size fits all and used the beefier springs for all models.

partsplaceinc sells them in the States, may be cheaper shipped.

If you have never done rears on a MK1 there are things to know that you are going to find out the hard way.

Plan on replacing the rear struts, why, because you have to lower them to get the springs off.

The Lower mounting bolt usually rust seizes to the inner metal bushing of the rubber bushing making it a pain in the heinny to get out.  I have had to use a Saw-zall to cut the bolts of on the inside of the mounting cup.  I have torched the heads off, I have torch cut the lower struts in half to get to the bolts. They are a PITA the first time… if they have been replaced prior and they took care in coating that bolt you won't have any issues, but I have been fighting that lower bolt for over 35 years….at least the first time, but never the second.

going back you wrap the new bolts grade 8 or 10, from head to threads with white teflon tape, then slather it with never-seize and you won't have any issues.

Here is the how do i do that with pictures.
