New cable needed?

Hi all

Just got my 1.5 GL back after its had a new Sachs clutch kit fitted and new transmission fluid.

It feels great: I actually have a biting point at the middle of the pedal now and it feels like a modern car, nice and light and no more slipping!!

However the top part of the pedal is now very loose/waggly until you depress it to the biting point.

The cable itself has now got space between the metal shroud and the plastic circular top of the cable when it didn't before, so I'm guessing it needs adjusting?

Or could it be that the cable is stretched/tired and that I just wouldn't have picked up on this before because the bite was right up the top and the clutch was knackered?

Grateful for any help!

Thanks

AntF

Update: just went out and adjusted the bottom nut on the cable and it's taken the play out of the pedal but I've noticed the cable is frayed at the top and there's now a fair bit of resistance in the pedal and it feels like it's grainy if that makes sense. Before I adjusted it the rubber was also moving freely about underneath the plastic head. Seems like it was in the adjustment but I think the cable has had it.

If the cable has any fraying then fit a new cable, with the new cable hang it up and drip in some 3in1 oil along the metal part of the cable till it comes out the bottom then fit it as this should make sure it runs nice and free. Make sure it is sitting straight down into the gearbox arm and the cable is not rubbing on anything.

There should 10mm of play at the top of the pedal movement so when you adjust the cable make sure you adjust it properly.

If you don't have a clutch repair plate on the bulk head fit one as well even if there is no sighs of cracking as it's such a weak point and fitting a plate will help strength the bulk head, the plates are stick on so clean around the area and push it on, I found a little grease around the rubber grommet of the clutch cable helps it slip into place when refitting as it can be a little tricky with a plate fitted.

Plate looks like this, 1st one I found but GSF and other places also sell them.

Cable should be straight down like this, I also wrapped a bit of wire around mine to hold it in place.

adjust the 10mm of free play at the box end, grab the cable and lift straight up and set it to 10mm for starters. see how it feels, you can adjust it a little either way just dont go too mad you need at least some slack in the cable.

as above though, deffo buy a new cable first :)

Thanks a lot for your help, both.

I've adjusted it as best I can to get the 10mm of play, but I've noticed that the bottom rubbers are all shot too and I'm missing the rubber washer, so I'll get a new cable and replace these parts when I get paid. And get a bulkhead plate!

Much appreciated.

You can buy the whole kit.

To be honest I can't really see the point of the rubber washer so that is why I don't have one on mine.

I would just buy this part and save some cash.

There is other places selling them and some on ebay as I see they are out of stock at classic VW.
