Types

Hi people, I've recently bought new steering  column bearings for my tin top 83 mk1 golf. And it dont fit. There seems to be two types of steering columns. Mine is fully round and the one this kit is for has flat sides near the bottom bearing. All the steering columns that are out there for sale are the same as mine. Does anyone have any information please on where I could purchase one or is the one I have the better type to have????

Thanks for the reply dude. Yes it's strange. This one here on this photo that you have posted is the one that will fit mine. I dont understand how they can sell this kit I've bought if you can't buy the column to go with it. I'll put a link up to the one I've got.

Looks like the same part no,  but the instructions say remember its a collapsible column,  dont think it is and perhaps thats the difference. Maybe american cars have one.

Cabriolets have a collapsible column.
That is that when you take the steering wheel off and you man handle it it can collapse, so you just pull it back out.

The inner shaft on my Cabriolets have a flat spot on the internal shaft, but there isn't a flat on the outer housing that I can remember seeing.

And I thought that the collapsible  shafts were on most 1980 or above Golf/Rabbits/Cabriolets/pickup's, as it was a major safety Item so on frontal impacts the steering wheel wouldn't impale the driver.  I know that my 81 Diesel Rabbit had one.

I have also seen that folks think the shaft has collapsed, when in fact that you have knocked the lower bearing out of the shaft and need to reposition it.

I also know that on later as in 90's cabbies that I have owned, I have had the mistake to knock the lower bearing out of position, and then the wheel will move out or in by about an inch or more travel.  When playing with the Air-bagged units in my life I usually found that I couldn't get the collar spring and C-Clip on as it doesn't have the space…That is when I have to get under the thing and move the shaft and bearing back in position and lock the movement as outlined below.

I have also learned that if I use a long Flat-Blade Screwdriver wedged in the lower u-joint, then a block of wood to use the Screwdriver as a lever/fulcrum that I can hold in position with my foot against the floor when playing with the Steering Wheel I usually can prevent the shaft from moving out of position, and or pushing the lower bearing out of position usually when I have the wheel removed.
