i eventually got around to fitting these.
heres how to get them on without removing hub
get a pair of tin snips and cut where the red lines are.
bend at the blue lines and with a bit of persuasion they will go over the hub part, the bent areas can be folded back with little effort. job done.
i intend to replace the brake dust guards shortly. could do with some advice.
i'm not sure on what has to be removed.
i will be replacing the top mounts, springs, strut inserts, strut mounts, disks ,pads and calipers all at once.
i have all the parts, just awaiting fitting.
do the hub carries have to be removed completely to swap out the brake shields

The shields sit behind the hub, which has to be removed for access.
You cannot remove the hub bearings without wrecking them, so to correctly install the guards you will need hub bearings.

Like rubjonny says, check the bolts that hold it on, because they can really corrode and round off! its easy enough to deal with that (providing you have a welder etc) but that still means removing the hub (and needing new bearings!
