Rear pads too thick?!

Post

Hi guys,

Got a rear disc conversion on my mk1, and am replacing the discs and pads.

I ordered these discs: https://www.vwheritage.com/357615601-rear-brake-disc-226mm-with-4x100-stud-pattern-vw-spare

I have the standard conversion calliper / carriers.

I took off the old pads and ordered the exact same ones (PAGID T5075): Pagid T5075 Brake Pad Set, Disc Brake : Amazon.co.uk: Automotive

I have re-fit and the pads are in the carriers. pistons have been wound back as far as they will go…but the calipers will not fit!! The pads are just too thick - I reckon about 2mm.

Can anyone tell me whether the pads that I ordered were the wrong ones? And if so which ones to buy?

Thanks!

There is a similar issue on the Front pads if you ordered solid rotor pads and you have vented rotors.

I looked at the rotors and they are solid.
I can't tell about the pads.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I've done a bit more digging and found this.

The pads I bought are 87x53x17.2mm
eBay

Looking at other pads, I can see they are 87x53x15mm!!

So this 2mm difference per pad would definitely make up the difference!!

Anything else I should know before I stump up for some new pads again? lol

Rear pads too thick?!

I had this issue and I got the angle grinder and chamfered the edges of the pads just enough til they fitted . I don’t remember having any binding issues for too long after.

Actually I think there’s also a question if you have 8 valve rear brake set up and 16v rear brake. I stand corrected but I think rear pad thickness is different . Vaguely remember having this issue and was  down to 8v and 16v  difference

I'm not sure if I have 8V or 16V setup; I'll check the calipers. But I don't want to grind down my pads, so I'll probably try buying the 15mm thick ones rather than 17.2mm thick and that should solve it

Just FYI, the 15mm thick pads solved it - so the rears are all done!
