Moving shifter back underneath.

My shifter is inside the car with a hole cut in the bulkhead for the 2 cables at the moment and I'd like to put it back in it's OE position underneath as I want to fit a centre consul.
I've purchased a 5 speed from a later model so it has the good ends on it (can't remember what model it's from but I did the research on here and got the one everybody recommends) but when I was under the car the other day for something else I noticed the lack of room in the area due to the large diameter exhaust filling some of the space.(BAM fitted) I think the pipe could be as big as 3 inches.

Is it possible to fit the shifter back under or am I stuck with it inside the car?
I can jack it up for some pictures if needed.

 

Hi fitted the set up from a mk4 Gti fitted under the car , my exhaust is a stainless magnex system, not sure if it’s 2 1/2 or 3 inch, but  I just wrapped the cables to protect from heat
