What upgrade option are there and what would you reccommend

Hey there,

I’ve just got myself a Mk1 Polo with a 1.4 AFH hybrid upgrade. It’s a bit quick and I don’t think the standard brake system quite is up to the job. I have really struggled to find infrmation on what options I have to upgrading the braking system.

Any knowledge, advice and experience would be much appreciated?

all the best,

Joss

Sorry can't help but you may be better asking on a Polo forum as most of us have Mk1 Golfs..

Quick Google search.

Most common upgrades to a Mk1 Golf are..

Braided brake hoses.
Bigger servo.
Bigger calipers and discs.

Also try my favourite mk1polo.com

I went with VW calipers and carriers from a mk1 golf! They fit fine assuming you have a facelift mk1.

Braided lines, drilled and grooved discs and standard pads. Don't be tempted by yellow stuff or similar pads as they don't really get hot enough to work properly on a road car imo. I also used an MC from a Lupo as I needed to clear the twin carbs I have on the Derby.

Probably just changing the brake fluid will make a big difference too, as no-one ever does it.

No servo to upgrade but Ratsport do a remote servo for not a lot that can be used if you so desire. Just build up your leg muscles and push harder!

Yes new brake fluid makes a massive difference, it should be changed every 3 years.

Nice1,

Cheers for the advice guys. Your right the pedal is v- spongy so a fluid change defo would help.

I figured I'd upgrade at the same time as a fluid change. It's the non facelift 1978. It Going to do all the upgrades you suggested but I'm thinking with the G40 calipers instead.

It's either that or from what I could see buy the Tarox Kit for the G40. (£900+)

Cheers for your time and advice guys

Didn't realise it was an early one.

In that case you'll need to get some later front hubs from a later mk1/mk2 or mk3 as the bearing face that the brake disc bolts to has a different off set and you'll never get the calipers to go on with the brake pads in.
