mk1 non standard wheel bolts

Post

Well I think someone at some point upgraded my mk1's wheel bolts

working on my mk1 cab to check and order brake and suspensions parts I noticed when took well off that the wheels bolts are not bolts but threads and wheel nuts.

Is this normal for US spec Cabs? Asking to see if I need to change this back to normal setup or I might go 5x112 setup so I have more options on wheels

Appreciate other cab owners insight.

No that isn't normal, and I would suspect that you will need to remove the Hub, and that would require a new bearing as you destroy the old.

If you want to return it, then you might as well buy a new
pair of hubs.

No it isn't oem Spec for a US Cabriolet, as all Cabriolets came from Germany…as LHD.

I never underestimate the actions of the Previous Owners Serviceability (POS)…

Just wind out the studs. Replace with bolts. Job done.

I didn't even consider studly's I was thinking more of they used a bolt from the back.

Yep, I would see if they are Studs and remove them.

I suspect that some one used a Thicker rim or offset plate and needed the extra length as the oem bolts were too short….SO Lets get a Stud, instead of a longer lug bolt and a few lug nuts, besides the one that was working on the car.  :)

thanks this is what I thought as well but wanted some confirmation from others. I am going to pull the fronts off and replace with 5x112 setup, so can install OEM looking bolts but give more options on wheels (I have nice set of wheels with 5x112 bolt setup)

I will document this up in my build thread.

Looking at it more today looks like its threads added, not bolts from behind, so should be easy add to nuts on and then undo… well hopefully it will be that easy after some WD40 added to free up these threads.
