Input shaft seal, how far in?

I'm replacing the seals on a 4T gearbox. Does anyone know how far in the input shaft seal should be driven? Until it stops? I was to quick removing the old one so didn't take notice

Could anyone just confirm if the input shaft has a grove for the seal to stop against or not? I think I drove the seal in further than the original, and it felt like I could go further in lol.. Used an OE  seal so would be reassuring to know

I think that looks about right as I think there is a lip behind the seal to stop it going to far back, It's been a couple of years since I changed all the seals on the gearbox. Ill try and find the pictures I took when I get home and can check on my PC.

Are you changing the push rod seal and the brass push rod bush as well?

Yes had a lot of help from that site.. Looking at other pics of input seals they do seam do sit more flush with the opening, so I'm worried I might have smashed it against the bearing behind or something like that. I've replaced the bronze bushing and pushrod seal as well, ease going that one. Much appreciated if you have any pics of it.

Yes my seal is in the same place as yours.

Ignore the bolt as that's what I used to pull out the brass bush, Cut a thread in the old bush, screwed the bolt in and turned the nut to pull the bush out..

Thanks for the picture! Good idea threading a nut onto the bolt, I used an old pushrod to tap the bolt out

I have found that PCV Plumbing connector bits are a excellent Seal driver, they com in Various sizes and usually do the job nicely without damage to the seal.



When doing flat seals I get them started, then use a flat fender washer (hole large enough) to press the seal to the correct depth…. all is subjective as to how deep the original was and with the modern age taking photos is the easiest way I know of to document your before to after.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

Thanks Briano.. I used a PVC plumbing myself, but it was a bit too effective. When using the fender washer, do you drive it in until the washer is flush with the casing? I am pretty certain I drove it in further than the original, so I am still wondering if I am better off doing it again.. Used an expensive VW seal though so it kind of sucks
