Gti gearbox onto Diesel engine

I have a dx engine in my Cabriolet, at some stage I'm fitting a Ahu engine into it can I keep things simple and use the gearbox from the gti? Will the ratios from the gti be ok with the Diesel?

A non diesel transmission will be sluggish.

Find out the Stamping on your Bellhousing later cabs were AUG usually,

Then look at the gears on a "Diesel"

Vast differences in ratios… and Final drive.

So you are looking up a Street that is named after one of my Cousins…………

Thanks again briano, I have the gearbox from the vw sharan but the gearbox shafts are push in fit with no cups,and not the splined cv joint as per cabby

look for a mk1/2/3 diesel or 4+e carb 020 gearbox for a direct swap. the gti box ratios will be far to short to be any use at all in a diesel

I would change to hydraulic clutch or use seat cable conversion and find a golf tdi gearbox. The ratios on 020 are all a bit short for tdi and clutch wont like the amount of torque. you will need the conversion mounts for the tdi box and driveshafts with 100mm inner cv's. its one thing I wish I did on my aaz as I ended up changing the clutch 3 times and it would top out at 90 mph, that had the 020 mk3 td box.

I've got an o20 box from a m3 td.. £60 in Manchester 

Cheers folks I'm still undecided about fitting the tdi in the cabby. What sort of mpg does a gti cabby do as opposed to an Ahu Diesel tdi?

I've just tdi'd mine but no speedo at mo but used it all week and used around quarter of a tank.. I'm guessing I've done around 160 -200 miles

I fitted 1z tdi with 02a box from mk3 golf.. I was gonna keep the std cable clutch so bought the 020 diesel box but decided I wanted hyd clutch hence the td 020 for sale
