gearbox flange seals

Post

Hi all, a couple of quick questions….the passenger side flange seal is leaking on my gearbox the driver side one seems to be OK but while I am  getting my hands dirty fixing the passenger side I might as well go the whole hog and change the drivers side as well. Now on the driver side ,there is a green cup where the seal is. Does this green cup have to be changed as well ? Or do I just change  the seal and leave the cup alone ? Also are the seals either side the same, with the same part number or are they different? The seal number I found online is 020301189. I think this is correct. Thanks for any advice.

No the Cup stays, or goes, it is after all replaceable as well.

The seal is the same for 90mm axles as 100mm.

Here is a DIY that I dude on my auto, the seal replacement is the same.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

You need to get a kit like this so you have all the seals needed.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Caddy-Scirocco-Golf-MK1-MK2-GTI-020-Gearbox-Drive-Flange-Seal-Kit-020498085E-/161959751928?hash=item25b58db0f8:g:G4sAAOSwpzdWqOpD

You will need to make a tool to stop the flanges flying off when removing and to keep them on when putting it all back together.
The hardest part of the job is getting the circlip back on as it has a tendency to keep flying off the circlip pliers.

It is possible to change them with the gearbox on the car as there's just about enough room.
I've changed seals 3 times, twice with the gearbox on the car and once with it off, much easier this way.

My home made tool, 3 threaded bars, some nuts and a alloy cross bar, you don't really need the box section which I have.

Time I did it with the gearbox on the car.

Leave the green seal in place.

New seal fitted.

Make sure you used the right tool to undo the drive shaft bolts, 12 point spline tool is needed.
I found I had to loosen the camber bolts to get the drive shaft out of the way or perhaps undo the bottom ball joint so you get enough movement to get the driveshaft out of the way.
