Driveshaft driving me mad

Post

So, I’m running an ABF in my ‘91 cabby. For reasons that elude me, it wont stop daffodil oil.

It turns out it’s the driveshaft - near side, keeps coming out by 10mm or so. I’ve replaced the circlips twice, but still it’s shifted.

Any ideas?

Near side Far side, as in Left or Right as you are sitting in it?  I don't have the knack of knowing how y
all describe the cars.  Which C-or Cir-Clip.  Wheel bearing, shaft clip, inside the differential cup? on the shaft or on the hub bearing?

Pictures also help this poor old boy under stand to which you are speaking.

Tech-speak from the left-hand or right-hand side of the pond do differ, but the pictures don't lie.

What the heck is daff-o-dill oil? CV joint Grease, Axle Grease, 90Wt gearbox oil?

The inner cv has a circlip on the end but it also has a washer on the other side of that cv .

Ha ha! Thanks - daffodil oil is my poor typing and autocorrect! Dropping oil!

Sorry - when I say nearside I mean left as you’re sitting in the car and it’s the inner or gearbox side.

Sorry, can’t take photos as car at another place at mo.

So, it is the inner joint, gearbox side. Does that have a washer too?

Yes .When you change inner cv you take circlip off.but it has a washer on the driveshaft that acts as a stop when you put cv back on then you put circlip on . Like a 1/4 pounder except cv in the middle

Dripping oil is usually a sign that your differential seals are shot, so I would have to ask is it 90 weight or  10w40… as that would be the bigger clue.

If it is dripping 90wt, then make sure you keep your tranny topped if it is a 5spd as 5th gear relies on splash and if it drops too low you will burn out your 5th gear.

Seals aren't that hard to change on the car, I have a how do I do that, on a auto, but it is the same as the manual.

There are Seal cup kits that include the inner rubber shaft cover and a new c-clip as well as the seal…

You will need a few special tools or can rent them.
in my case my seal was destroyed by the inner race on the diff as it was hammered by a broken re-manned axle…the new seal lasted about a day.

If you look at the pictures, you can see the hammered shaft, that it took me about 3 hours to get the c-clip out as the shaft was peened so hard that it closed around the c-clip.
