Drilled rear discs?

Post

HI guys,

So I'm replacing the discs and pads on the golf. It came with a rear disc conversion already (226mm x 10mm) and uprated front discs (283mm x 20mm).

The rears I have are drilled, and I can't find online anywhere any rear discs which are drilled. Is there any point? Should I just go for the solid ones?

The golf has an R32 lump in it, so I want to make sure the brakes / pads setup is strong. Any advice on which discs and pads I should get for strong brake performance?

Cheers!

Drilled slotted and the such to me while good for High Speed uses as in Aircraft, and Racing Cars, are useless for a daily driver.

The Vented fronts and solid rears are more than sufficient to Stop your car. IMHO.  The Drilled and Slotted are Showy, High Priced and Don't really add to the Braking of the car they are showy, and more costly and I have seen most of them made from "Chinese" Steel.

Look for American, German, Canadian made rotors and such Higher Grade of steel, and usually 2 times the cost of the low end.

For Pads I have been using Hawk Ceramic pads for years on my Cabriolets, I got a good deal on 6 sets @ 5 bucks each because of discontinuing the product line at a vendor.

I have been using Ceramic pads of different types (makers for years).  I had a heat fade issue on a Van I drove, and the Ceramic pads took care of that, they are rotor friendly, and Dustless as compared to Semi-metallic, and or organic pads.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Yeah, I think a plain rear disc will be more than adequate, I have never found the need to fit drilled or slotted discs on a road car..

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments! I'll go with plain for the rears.

I'm finding it hard to find 4x100 283mmx20mm fronts though…is there an easier / more standard size to find?

Also, below is a picture of the pads currently on the car. Bottom one is off the rears and the top 2 are off the fronts. Note how the top two are different shapes but were on the same calliper…is that normal?

I've not done any brake work before, hence my very beginner questions! Appreciate the help!

280 maybe?

I found these 280x22, but the price seems criminal!

There another manufacturer that has 4x100 with 283x20mm as standard?

Just out of interest, what front calipers do you have?

I don't actually know - I'll take a picture and post it up. I've ordered stuff for the rear axle, but I'm still struggling with the fronts (where to buy the correct sized discs and why my front brake pads are different shapes)

From memory, as I don't have any, the mk1 gti does have different pads side to side, which is why I wondered which calipers you have. I thought if you had one of the old conversions which spaced the standard calipers out and used a larger disc,  if I remember correctly, (20 odd years ago) I bought one of these kits, sold as 280mm but the discs were actually a bit larger and I had to turn them down in a lathe, just a thought.

Thanks sporttrucker.

These discs seem to be the right size…apart from the overall depth. Says that the overall depth is 39.2mm, but measuring my discs they seem to be 50mm overall depth.

Thoughts or alternatives?

(also I'll get a picture of the front callipers soon so I can try and figure out which pads to get)

Who knew brakes were complicated?!

Here's a picture of the front calliper, and also the adapter plate that's bolted to the front hub.

Also a photo of the different sized brake pads in the front carrier.

Cannot see them, don't know if its just me.

Can see them now, I think they are as I thought, spaced out mk1 calipers.  You need to source some g60 type calipers/ discs and epytec adaptor brackets.  The ones you have, if mk1, although an improvement on 239 size just wont be up to the job..

Ok thanks. So I've found some of the items I need (I think)

Brakes: https://www.buycarparts.co.uk/brembo/1657055

epytec adapters: https://www.bolt-action.nl/product/mk1-280mm-g60-brake-adapter-kit/

Pads: https://www.mtecbrakes.com/brake-discs/volkswagen/corrado-89-96/corrado-1-8-g60-07-89-12-92/front-brake-pads/dp2841.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsNfE1fPs2gIVTbTtCh2JqQzTEAQYASABEgIGOfD_BwE

BUT, I am finding it bloody confusing finding the right calipers and carriers… I can't find the right ones and am pulling my hair out. Seems I can get corrado or mk2 g60, but maybe also mk3 gti 16v… But I can't find carriers at all anywhere!!

Couldn't help point me in the right direction for the calipers and carriers? (assuming the discs, pads and adapters above are correct)

No I cannot help,  I see you have a wanted advert, good idea, and they appear on ebay every now and again. Of course depending on your finances willwood and other aftermarket alloy caliper conversions are available..

Do the discs, pads and adapters look like the right ones?

These look like the right calipers? I'm told they're G60 calipers and carriers - hopefully it's the last piece of the puzzle.
