Clutch cable pulled through - Anyone used the Citi Golf linkage?

Post

Hiya guys,

Haven't posted on here for ages but lots has been happening with the golf! Glad to see the forum is very active still.

So despite having the repair patch installed, my bulkhead has been trashed. The repair panel split in two leaving a right mess. Plan A is to spend a weekend welding it up and reinforcing it, but I just came across these brackets from a 'VeloCiti' Citi Golf, and I was wondering if anyone runs one?

From what I can see:

Pros:
Forces distributed across a larger area of the bulkhead
Easy to spread load with a plate behind the bracket
Clutch cable routing is nicer as it runs behind the engine
Claimed lighter clutch feel?

Cons:
Additional pivot may create extra friction/play/wear
Availability - can only find in SA.

What do you guys think?

Looks like the plates broke loose at the rusty areas.
I would tend to thing that you may have to drop the pedal assembly and beat the metal back into shape, some grinding and cleaning is required, followed by using a weld through primer and welding in re-enforcement plates front and rear. I would also stop drill the cracks that is drill a hole at the bottom of the crack to prevent it from further issues, even if you are welding it.

I don't see a typical re-enforcement plate in place but a rather large fender washer.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks Briano,
It had one of those plates. It cracked down the middle. Plan A was to fully cut out all the damaged area, and weld 2 of those plates in, double thickness, with a reinforcing gusset behind.

The cause - rubbish aftermarket clutch cable, which is crazy stiff. Few pumps would loosen it up, but also likely in the process hammered my bulkhead. I give up on aftermarket stuff for this car now, it keeps biting me in the behind.

Questioned whether it was the cable itself or poor routing. Checked the cable today - it's dreadful and only a few months old. Tried spray grease. Made it worse as it's now full of gunk.

It's a 1.3 G40 - I cannot get hold of a genuine RHD cable anymore. The LHD one is too short. Begrudged to buy another aftermarket cable. Stupidly threw my old one away - was better than this junk!

Leaning towards this citi golf part, as it means I can use a MK2 golf or Polo cable, which I can still source genuine. Failing that, I'll look into finding a genuine cable off a small block that has the right length, and modify the pedal interface.

Found a genuine cable after trawling through eBay. Will reinforce the bulkhead. Still intrigued by this Citigolf bracket though - especially if it makes the clutch a little lighter - nicer for quick shifting and town driving.

r_chez_08 - how did you get on with this in the end?

Did you do plan A and re-inforce, or plan B and source that part from SA?
Same thing just happened to me, and that plate is now out of stock in Heritage parts.
I've found this plate in SA, not sure if compatible:

Also speaking to Kenny at Kenny classics.

Interested to know how you got on though?
