1.5GX Brakes

Compatibly

I've got a 1.5GX and I'm wondering if I can straight fit the vented versions of the brake disc instead of the regular standard one, depths being 12mm standard and 20mm vented.

Also Is there an advantage in doing so?

If fitting the vented discs, reckon you might need the matching caliper carriers to span the disc, not sure about the calipers. Will it make much difference? probably not a lot, unless you are getting brake fade and require the cooling characteristics of the vented disc..

These are vented (gti) carriers, the bit the pads slide on measures about 55mm, end to end.

Ah, ok thanks. They don't actually look to different to the ones already on it but I'll check the measurements and see. 👍🏻

Hi. The chances are that you have VWII calipers fitted. I have them fitted to my 83 1.5 GL. See my blog "GarytheGolf".

I believe that these are the same calipers fitted to the GTI. The only difference is that the GTI has thinner pads and vented discs, the GL has thicker pads and solid discs.

From an economic point of view, I cannot see any benefit fitting the vented discs unless you upgrade your system with a larger servo, rear discs, etc. for maybe a bigger/ uprated engine change.

Thanks,

Pretty sure it's the VWII style, reason I was asking is that I'm going to be reconditioning the caliper with the piston and slider kit and noticed the vented version. I'm going to have to change the disc and it's slightly warped and quite worn.

I have attached a bit from my blog where I serviced mine and clearly showing the VWII on the calliper assembly, hope this helps.

I have been cleaning and refurbishing the front calipers over the last few weeks. This is what they look like after a bit of cleaning and pickling, masking and ready for painting.

Halfords caliper paint. I use this all the time.

What miserable weather for a Bank Holiday! I decided to take over the dining table, with a few worried looks from the wife, to re-assemble the calipers.

I was able to get new seals from ebay, however the external piston boots supplied were a slightly different shape. I was able to re-use the original boots after cleaning.

I was quite amazed how the parts all came up, particularly the pistons, guide pins and the anti rattle springs. Clean everything with methylated spirit before assembly. I had already assembled the rubber and plastic sleeves back into the caliper body

I was able to get the red rubber grease or assembly paste. In addition the mechanical green grease for the guide pins and good old copper grease for the threads.

I always buy new tools as I need them.

The red rubber grease is used for all those parts incontact with the brake fluid.

After fitting a new seal, use the tool to wind the piston back in.

The external boot fits over the piston and pushes into the caliper housing. Put a little extra grease in the boot to keep the moisture and dirt out.

Assembly of the outer mounting with the guide pins. Guide pins are installed with copper grease to ease later dismantling as required.

Greeen mechanical grease for the guide pins, this grease is not for use with brake fluid.

You can see that these calipers are the MkII Kelsey Hayes type. I believe that these where also used on the Mk 2 Golf and could accept GTI vented discs.

All assembled and ready to fit on the car. It's still raining !! maybe tomorrow!. I am happy with my work today.

Wow, that's really good. I love how new they look now. I would've been happy to just have them functioning correctly but now I think I may have to spray and clean them like you've done.

Does the paint come in different colours as I may pick something a bit brighter.

Yes you can fit vented disc to your car if you wish but you will need to buy the thinner Gti brake pads.

The benefits will be less chance of brake fade if pushing on, the down side is the pads will not last as long as they are thinner.

Ive found Brembo brake disc and Pagid brake pads a good combination and my cars a daily drive.

What I have, use the discount code for extra discount.
price is for 1 disc, you will need 2!

Check the diameter of your disc, these are 239mm discs

You you can also get them from Euro car parts as it's a sister company to car parts 4 less.
