02s gearbox in 20vt conversion

Post

Hi guys,

I've got a 20vt conversion with currently a 5-speed from an old SEAT. I want to put in a 6-speed, and was going to take the plunge with an 02M from an audi s3 8l (same as what my engine came from) and go with the chassis notch etc, but then I've heard that an 02s box (which I believe is the 6-speed from mk5-gtis) is actually the same size as the 02j, just with an extra gear…which would mean no chassis notch!

So, anyone done this before? Anyone got any info on it? Thanks.

yes its an 02J with an extra gear. but with all things, its not as simple as you would hope

1st issue is there is no hole for a speedometer sender, as the mk5 onwards cars get that from the ABS controller. 2nd issue is on some the holes you need for the mounts are missing. last thing is they have 108mm flanges, but thats same deal with 02j swap for 100mm bolt in ones.

problems 1 & 2 can be solved by swapping the casings over from an 02J, but this means having all the preloads etc rechecked by a pro. I would recommend Martin Emment on facebook, otherwise known as 'Hotgolf'

the last issue is actually finding one with decent ratios in to suit your car, the most common ones you'll find are from the 2.0 FSI (NOT the TFSI GTI!) MK5 and Audi 83. The ratios on those are like a mk3 2.0 8v box with all the ratios spaced out a bit to 6 gears rather than 5, i.e. pretty useless for a 20v

There are ones out there with decent ratios just slightly harder to get, but usually you will find a few on ebay if you search just will be quite pricey, especially when you factor in the casings swap…

Anyway if you're serious I would speak directly to the gearbox legend and he'll have all the information you need. he might even have a box in stock he can sort out for you ;)
