Original rear silencer for a 1.8 GTI

Post

Hello,

For my 1983 Golf MK1 1.8 GTI I am looking for to replace the aftermarket rear silencer with something as close to original as possible. I have done some research, but it would be amazing if someone could confirm the following:

1. Is it correct that I should get an oval rear silencer for a 1.8 GTI, as opposed to the round rear silencer?
2. Are there any recommend brands? I have seen Ernst being mentioned here and there.
3. Is the rear silencer on a 1.8 GTI identical to the rear silencer on a 1.8 GTI cabrio? I found this cabrio rear silencer on sale, but I have no idea if they are similar or not.

Thanks in advance.

1 correct.1.6 gti is round
2 think poss only Ernst making them? I got one 3 years ago to replace the 17 years old/30,000 mile one fitted when I restored the GTI in 2000
3 think post '87/88 they changed the design/hangers?

1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Thank you very much! In that case I will be looking at a tintop oval 1.8 GTI exhaust.

I know that on my 81 diesel golf it was round from the factory, and that my 90 Cabriolets were oval.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
