Fuelling issue (I think)

Hello all!

I have had my golf for over 5 years now, and after changing the fuel tank recently, I put petrol in it for the first time (only a jerry can full). The petrol didn't seem to flow in very well, and today I put another jerry can's worth in, there was a lot of glugging noises, and I had to remove the can a few times to let air out so I could get more fuel in, which then sat in the filler neck, as I could see it when I shone a torch in there.
I have searched around the forum and elsewhere and seen a lot of posts about pressure in the fuel tank, however when I take the cap off there doesn't seem to be any sort of evidence of pressure build up.
I'm sure I put everything back (breather lines) on the fuel tank correctly, but cannot be sure if it had this problem before or not.
After driving the car today, I noticed that when giving it some, it seems to lose power and bog down a bit. Accelerating in 1st gear was fine, then changed into second, foot back down and at around 4-5k, it completely lost power so quickly took my foot off, clutch back in, and behaved fine after that to drive normally. The car also seems to idle fine, starts fine etc

Hoping to find someone who has had similar issues so I can be pointed into the right direction to start looking for faults

Thanks in advance
Charlie

I suspect the Gravity breather and vent line to the filler neck of your tank is kinked or plugged.

Thanks I will check that first
Is that likely to be causing the problem with bogging down under acceleration too?

That should answer the fueling question.
The second part would possibly be fuel flow limiting or choking.
That could be but not limited to:
Fuel filter, Fuel Pump, You didn't spec Carb or CIS, so I would also think possibly the Baffles in the Tank if equipped are divirting fuel from the intake port accumuator.
I have seen mufflers fail internally that cause a issue under acceleration where it plugs up. but under idle and soft driving it is open to allow the car to breath

The the inevitable fuel pump relay because of the rev limiter in them and the propensity of the Circuit Board to over heat and become full of cold soldered joints.

When this was happening did you hear any loud whine from the rear wheel arch?

My Wife owned a Toyota, that she claimed wouldn't get over 40mph….. ok I drive the heck out of it and it is at 60-75-90 just fine for me.  The next day, it won't go over 20…. Same thing… Then finally she can't get out of the parking lot.
I have no issues getting it over to my fathers garage, and as I was pulling in it died, no matter how much gas… It would start back up…. then under throttle it died…  Took the air cleaner off, and we watched at idle the car ran fine.  Pull the throttle cable and it would shoot Gas out the Carbs throat bog down and die….
A week later and a Carb rebuild, same thing… So we took the exhaust off at the manifold, and Wally's your uncle it was running great and never bogged down.

Removing the Muffler (which looked great from under the car) was really rusted at the top.  We decided to cut it open, that is were we found that under load….the internals would move to block exhaust… (think of the old trick of a potato in the tail pipe_).

Oh and lastly how good are your Earth cables on the Battery?

It's fuel injection not carbs, 1.8 dx
May have to get someone out to help me test the fuel pump in that case, although I'm sure it didn't behave like this before I had the tank off etc so maybe it is something I have done (usually the case).
Couldn't hear any sort of whining noise, and it has a relatively new 2 branch manifold with a supersprint system so its unlikely to be that.

Thanks for the help I shall get a few things looked at and get back to you

Check the breather side of things and if OK it may be the fuel lift pump is failing and your car is not getting enough fuel but not 100% sure when VW started to fit a lift pump inside the fuel tank.
If you remove the base of the back seat and the black round cover you will see the top of the fuel tank, 2 fuel lines and a electrical connection, if you have 3 wires you have a lift pump if only 2 no lift pump.
Does your main fuel pump underneath the car get louder when the car coughs and splutter?

I think its two wires but cant be sure without checking, can't really be sure of the noise, as the other noises in the car are far too loud to notice!
Will hopefully be taking a look at whats been suggested this week
