Hi all again im new so bear with me as the last golf a played with was a vr6 mk3 and am learning.

I have just bought a mk1 cabriolet 1982.
It was originally a 1.5 auto and has had a few different engines in it.
Now has a 1.8 carb.
The wiring loom is a little messy and a number of things are not working.
Can any one give me some hints as to what should be there on the loom snesor wise for this engine?
Ill stick some snaps up in a moment of the random plugs and wires i have dangling.

Welcome….
May be better if you tell us what's not working then someone can tell you what wires are fitted to it….
Which type of fuse board do you have, does it have the bullet type fuses or the blade type fuses?

Photo's are always better than words so upload them to "photobucket" or similar site and copy and paste the IMG code into your post.

1978 Mk1 Scirocco GLS 1.6cc FR, Webber carb. Weekend toy.

Right so ive taken some photos and have done some searching but because the loom has been adjusted and possibly things arent where they should be im lost.
My haynes golf manual has been ordered but i would like to get it fixed by the end of the day!

So for starters the starter motor is slow and sluggish to turn over but I have jumped it off my land rover and tried attaching the jump leads to the positive side of the starter and the engine earth strap but to no help? Any clues or tips?
The brown wire is connected to a red and black wire which goes to the fuse box?

Then there is the mess at the coil end ive checked that the 4th wires goes to the + side and the 1st to the neg side.
Found a black and red wire dangling so i presumed that was the rev counter and connected it to the neg side.

Should there be more wires on the alternator?

I should probably know but could someone give me a clue as to what this is and is it wired correctly?

Any help is muchly appreciated!

1. looks a bit bodged, you should have a wire to battery + and another to alternator. the extra one I guess was added to try and fix the slow cranking. try putting a jump lead from battery -ve to one of the bolts holding on the starter, if that helps then your box earth point is dirty

2. aaaarrghhh  you should have an ignition live from fusebox, and another wire to the TCI unit on the positive side, will be labelled 15 or +. this looks ok, if a bit bodged. the red/black to fusebox is the rev counter as you say and should go on the negative side labeleld 1 or -, along with the green wire from the TCI unit

3. yes, you should have a blue wire to the smaller stud labelled D+, this goes along to theblue spade on the lighting loom near the battery + red wire to fusebox

4. binbinbinbin this is some random resistor which has replaced the original dimdip resistor. responsible for lots of loom fires! go back to the 2 pin plgu nearby and unplug -> bin. to go a step further go behind fusebox and find the 2 yellow wires from the 2 pin plug and unplug those too, tape them up safe so no chance of wire shortage.

Sorry for the delay in reply as a birthday treat I got to help the old man wash the cars instead of sorting mine out. Even at the age of 33 im not getting paid to scrub!
