Which starter motor and where to buy?

Post

I've just removed the knackered starter on my recently acquired MK1 'F' Reg Golf GTI Cabriolet.

I thought the part number was 055911023D, but the images I can see online for various options seem to have different mounting points, etc.

It also has a Bosch part number, 0001208411.

Can someone please confirm what starter I need to buy and from where (recommendations on make would be appreciated).

Thanks

Dan

Fitted the replacement today, it's so nice to be able to turn the key and start the car.

I'm on the lookout for another Starter Motor …. Old one off first and find out why its making so much noise … I've discovered the Starter off a Maestro or Montego (Austin / Rover) might be the same ???

Starter now sorted - ebay purchase £32, with "free" postage. Bosch unit, listed for the Montego and Maestro Scirocco, Golf and a few others too ! Body a bit "fatter" than original caused a minor issue with the fixing bolts … A quick touch on the grinder. Done I can now "drive it" on the Starter, should I want to !

Read the tsb for heat soak relay.
Starter relay for heatsoak problems | VW Vortex - Volkswagen Forum

Adding a Starter solenoid relay improves the Current to the starter solenoid, and off loads the hi-current off your ignition switch.  It works for manuals as well as automatics.  Makes it Easier to diagnose the ignition switch or the starter….

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Hmmm, looks "good to me" (brilliant even !) … Would a standard 30 Amp Relay do ? I suspect so. I might even have a go at something I've been considering by way of an additional immobiliser … Taking a fused feed off the brake light switch to a "Starter" Relay. Having the live feed for the Relay fed via the Brake light switch ? So to start you'd need your foot on the Brake Pedal as well as turn the Key … Maybe a bit of a faff though ? Just a mad idea ??? Maybe ???

Montego and Maestro used VW gearboxes for certain years, my 2nd hand 5 speed gearbox for my Mk1 Scirocco came from a scrap MG Montego as it was a 1/2 the price of a used gearbox from a Golf but this was years ago when there was loads of Montego and Maestro in scrap yards, most of them have now gone.....
