Crazy wiring

hi - new to the forum and looking for some help

recently bought a 1991 Clipper down in South Wales and drove it in the torrential rain for 7hrs back to Manchester. It was to say the least an interesting journey midnight in me being trailered home as a wiper came loose on the motorway.

Anyway - that's an easy fix. The rest has me flummoxed

During the drive home both electric windows stopped working. Stone cold dead. The heater also stopped working. If you flash the full beam, the coolant warning light flashes continually after the lights have been flashed. The green indicator flasher bulb on the dash is on continually, but flashes when you indicate. It never goes out….

whilst the car has 12 months MOT and isn't in bad condition, the trader I bought it from had changed the dash due to a "faulty cluster" and I'm thinking he just wired any cables he found together until the car ran. I'm no auto electrician and my hunt for someone local to help hasn't been successful.

Any pointers? Anything obvious I should be trying first before I resort to a garage and their extortionate rates? I'd love a mobile auto electrician to come tak a look but they seem hard to find nowadays!!

 

Sorry - heater also died on the journey back… was blowing, now nothing.

I guess it's wishful thinking that one thing may be causing all the issues, right?!

Plugged rain drains, water in the fuse panel, the window controller is under the steering wheel, and subject to water if the rain drains aren't cleared, and a rain divertor isn't installed.

I would suspect that your cluster needs to have the connector plumped, and a ground wire added to the brown wire on pin2 directly to the frame behind the cluster.

I would suspect that if you remove your battery, you need to then remove every relay and listen to it as you shake it for slooshing water….

If the relays have water in them then I would bet the fuse box as well.

You can remove the cover from the fuse panel and spray it with battery corrosion spray, then wire dry, and let it sit  for about 2 days and all is gonna be fine.

Windscreen wipers have black plastic caps that you pop off.  Use a 10mm socket and remove the nut.  Pull the arm off and use steel wool to polish the splines on the shaft.  Replace the arm and nut, position the arm and tighten the nut till the arm can't move…..

The windows probably mean that you need to dry that out, or replace it, but I would also check all fuses in the fuse panel.

for starters wiggle relay 17/18 that powers the things you mention that have failed. do the headlights work ok?
