Depending on the year and options you could have a 2 speed or a single speed fan.
A/C equipped card use a 2 speed fan, a 2 speed radiator fan switch.
As you are looking at the fan, the brown wire should be at your left.
Power is on the right as you are looking down at it. That is the easiest way to get one running backwards….DC motors are stupid they run either way…just reverse the wires and presto it is back asswards…
The motors are insulated from earth because of the shroud. So VW uses 2 or 3 wires to power them.
One is brown, and the other one is red/white, or a variation of red/black usually….
So I would first suspect the fan connections.
I would suspect that the Radiator fan switch could be wonky, and depending on the year they threw a relay in that is on the passenger side fender infront of the battery on a bracket that is attached to the fender lip.

When I'm stood in front of the car looking down at the motor the brown is currently on the right.

the plugs are keyed so should only fit 1 way, but chumps do manage to get roudn these things
