MK1 Golf GTI 1600 won't turn off.

I'm wondering if anyone may have seen this issue before.
I've not had the car long but it seemed to run ok apart from the cold start, but now the car won't turn off if i take the keys out its still running.
The only way i can cut it out is to pull the fuel pump relay. I disconnected the battery to replace ignition switch thinking this was the issue but when i reconnected the battery with keys out the ignition the fuel pump primed straight away and coil was live. Also oil light always lit regardless of key position unless running and the digital clock come on and off reading 27:00.

Hopefully someone can help. Many thanks in advance.

is there rust around the Windshield, Sounds like water in the Fuse Box, or bad ignition switch.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Thanks for your reply, already fitted new ignition switch. car stays on even with plug removed from ignition switch. no rust or water car is kept in garage and only comes out when roads are dry.

I would then back up to the Fuse box, as if you unplug the key, then you are looking at the fuse panel or relays having gone bad 1st suspect is the Load reduction relay, as on Start it cut out the Headlights, Heater blower and such to power the Starter.

So if you turn on your headlights, or heater fan does the headlights go out when the starter is running then back on when the key is placed in run?

if the oil light is on even with ignition off since the clock ignition wire comes straight out the back of the ignition switch then its the switch, or a short between live and ignition live. pulling the plug off the ignition switch has ruled the switch out as being the issue, so we are looking at a short to the ignition somewhere.

for starters, find the black wire on your ignition switch and chase that back to the fusebox as best you can looking for wire bodgery. do the same for the black wires on the coil. pull the radio out, if anyone has bodged the dash harness this is the most likely spot. plus you can get a good look at the dash wiring thru the hole.

take a photo of your fusebox showing relay layout, then pull each relay out one at a time and see if the dash turns off.  if it does, let us know what relay and its position. in fact post the picture of the fusebox, might be a relay in the wrong place!

if that doesnt help look very closely at the fusebox at the front and rear, check for signs of damp and water damage, plus any bodges to the wiring looms.

check the hazard switch wirign as well, make sure the blue/black wire is fitted to terminal 15 on the switch, and isnt shorted to the red/white wire
