turnsignal indicator relay gone wild?

having trouble with my blinker relay since removing the fuseholder, is the relay broken?

Hi all,

In search of some issues I have (hopefully soon to be resolved) with my cooling system, I removed the fuseholder out of its bracket and disconnected some wire plugs on the back.

After putting it all back together and in place there seemed to be an issue with my blinker relay or wiring (it was all perfectly working before). My turn signal indicator won't work anymore, the indicator LED on the dash lights hardly up, and sometimes the relay tick's ones or twice when you switch the lever.

However when playing with the wire harness in the back of the fuseholder it often starts ticking again, also when touching the relay it tick's a few times.

Sometimes the relay even seems to go mad and tick's very fast, check out this little movie, (pump up your volume) you will hear the relay go wild:

My first thought was a bad contact in the wiring or one of the plugs on the back.
But after dismantling and putting back together everything again, the problem persists.

Is the relay broke? I openend it and could not detect some weird issues, current seems to flow through it.

I'm far from being a specialist however, so maybe (hopefully) one of you guy's has a quick answer on this one?

Thanks!

Check your fuses, there are 2 fuses for the turns.  One on the low end f2 or 4, that is for the Hazards, and f19 usually for the turns only.

If you turn the turns on and the light but only glows it is the fuse.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Hi Briano1234

Fuses I already checked yesterday, they where all okay.

But I will check your other advice for sure tomorrow evening.

So no malfunctioning relay you think?

Cheers!

Relays going fast is usually a sign of a burned out light or bad socket front or rear.

Do the Hazards work fine, but the turns don't?

Thanks Brian.

The hazards do exactly the same as the indicators. I hear the relay clicking, but no lights are glowing, other fan the fading dash led.

I will double check on the fuses and the wiring tonight. But no real clue at this moment.

If everything was hunky-dory prior to Dropping the fuse box.

If you dropped the fuse panel, then I would disconnect the battery and drop it again, connect the battery and see if it straightens out.

Wires that have been in one position for 20 odd years really don't like change, and some become brittle and break.

Oh, and never ever move the fuse box with out removing the main battery ground,,,FIRST.

Why?

Problem solved!

I first tested the relay to make sure it was still in good working order, and it was.

I then disassembled everything again, cleaned the contacts thoroughly and added a bit of Vaseline so everything went back in smoothly. And problem solved.

Unfortunately I don't know exact which plug it was, but the main thing is that it's ready to go again!!!

Oh and about the advice of battery and dash fire
I did disconnected the negative art first, it was connected again just for testing purposes.
But thanks anyway!! One cannot be warned to much on these kind of things!!

Many thanks for the help on this one!!
Cheers!

The wonders of gremlins, and flaky connections……

I watched a stoner blow on some smoke that was coming out of his dash….. and the look on his face when it burst in to flames and took out his cheezy mostache, and eyebrows… was awefully funny….

Glad I had a fire extinguisher on hand….. His new 8-track install wasn't soldered, it was twisty wired and crappily taped.   Made a few bucks off of that repair…. Sold me on never using drugs, as with alcohol, it can make you STUUUUUUU-PID.
