Terminal removal tool

Post

I recently seen tool advertised somewhere on the internet that was for removing the metal terminals from the plastic plugs on VAG wiring looms.

Are these worth while? I'm going to have a bit of wiring to tidy up on the Golf and I'd like to keep it all looking original.

If you want to do it right yes, there are 2 styles the flat pin extractor and the circular pin extractor.

Depending on the type of pin you go back with you may need to either Crimp them, or solder.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

If your not in a rush, you could go el cheapo and try these, I just got a set and they seem fine for occasional use, although I've only removed one terminal with them so far, as up to now I've been using a set of tweezers I filed and bent to the correct size and shape.

it depends what plugs you want to strip apqart. most of the plugs in a mk1 dash are spade connectors so dead easy. some are junior/power timer and need a double prong tool but these are easy made yourself. depends how far you want to go really

Hi rubjonny, the first job is to replace the rubber grommet/conduit that protects the wiring going into the rear hatch. My plan was to remove the terminals from the connector blocks to feed the wires through the rubber grommet/conduit then re fit the terminals into the connector blocks, if you see what I mean.

right, probably easiest to pull the loom out the hatch and do it that way, the wirign in there is all spade connections so easy to split and you dont have to try and drag it all out the C pillar. before you pull it out tie string to the wiper plug and the heated screen plug, then pull it thru. tape the string to the tailgate, untie and do your repairs then use the string to guide it all back thru :)

Ok cool. When I done it on my other mk1 I seem to remember it being a complete pain either because of the size of the connector or the amount of wires, can't remember now. Anyway I will try your suggestion and hopefully that is all I need to do there. Still want to be able to dismantle the loom though.

yeah can imagine you would struggle if the plug still on, the mk1 boots are quite narrow. even with plugs off it'll be fun! string trick could help there too

as i say most of the plugs are spades so a lot of it can be split down easily with just a pick tool or thin screwdriver. the small round pins on fusebox you need a proper tool, which handily is dirt cheap. I think Mark Carter at classic-vw.co.uk is still selling them drop him a line (they are well worth the money!) for the big round pins these are dead easy again just need a thin screwdriver or pick just lever in the 2 tabs and out they pop.

for the rest it'll be junior/power timer type which are common so plenty of tools available from dirt cheap which need a slight mod to more expensive, to extortionate:

95% of the MK1 pins can be had new cheapy cheap. main ones you cant get are for the clocks and handbrake light plug, so be extra careful with those and if you need to replace its either solder or find another dash loom to retrieve spares from. (these are easy to remove, just lever the flap on the back and they pop out)

Excellent, thanks. I'll see what Mark has got seeing as I have got a shopping list with him currently! Hopefully I won't need to do anything with the dash loom, just the tailgate for now and engine bay in the future.
