If you can see it via the radio hole there is a ground star that may have things iffy on.
There is also an issue with the ground wire on the heater motor blower harness left side of the heater box
high a white or yellowed connector that if the ground pin is burnt, 3 cabbys had same issue.
I would test the heater switch all the wires are 12V.
well the main is black/red fed from f14 area.
Radios that don't work are bad power or bad grounds.
If the radio comes on but doesn't have any sound then that is a speaker wire mismatch or again ground issue to the speakers.
I replaced my Aktive and the Premium in both my cabbies with JVC Bluetooth aux media players, had a dickens of a time with the aktiv as the POS hacked and butchered the wireing. My 93 Premium was painless as I bought the connecter kit from soche, and it was plug and play till the door speakers bit the wienie.
What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?
They all start with GOOD Grounds.

lots of places sell them so shop around, I paid £30 for mine but I’ve seen them for less and more money on eBay etc.

Nice clear sound but with the rubbish design by VW the front speakers are never going to be great that low to the floor, they do lack bass but I've a amp and sub in the boot which makes up for that no problem.
Later cars have this type of door pocket/speaker.

Early cars have this type which the speakers in the link I posted are a direct replacement.

Drained the battery, and well being a EFI engine, no push and pop the clutch would work….
I used the Demister switch as it is a switched power place and easier to get to.
remember what Smokey the Bear say's if you forget to be mindful of power and grounds.
