Won't start when hot

Hi people,

If my golf is hot and I stop for over 10 minutes the car won't start again very easily I have to crank the pig for about 30seconds and fource the engine to start and when it finally does its coughing and spluttering. Any idea what this is?

I have replaced the fuel pump with a brand new one. The sparks, HT leads and dizzy cap plus rotor arm have been replaced. FYI - When I turn the key just before the igojition position the fuel pump sounds like it primes ok (loud whirring noise over the rear wheel arche)

Carbe'ed or DIgifant?

If Digifant, I would look for residual pressure issues with the Fuel Pressure Regulator, and or a bad or defective CTS sensor.  There is also the possibility that the o2 is wonky.

For a test you can unplug either the CTS or the O2, and if it works then replace it, if it doesn't then it is the other or not.

If you let the car cool? Does it start right up?

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

It's still possibly a K-jet injection system for a 90's Gti in the UK?

I would have a look at the accumulator, there is a screw at the back of it, undo it and if petrol leaks out your accumulator is shot. If no fuel coming out the look else where….

The accumulator holds the fuel pressure in the fuel system so when the car is hot/warm it starts easier, it lives underneath the car near the main fuel pump.

There is a few threads on accumulators.

They are not cheap to buy and I can't guarantee it will fix your problem so check the cheaper things 1st.
Fuel mixture and timing?

Lift pump in fuel tank ok?

Fuel pump relay as I guess yours is an aftermarket one as it's priming when you turn the ignition on, what number/marking do you have on the relay?

What type of fuel are you using, super or normal unleaded and has the timing been set up for the right fuel?

Hey guys just to clarify the engine is a k-jet fuel injection 8v.

Mark1gls - if I let the engine cool down it starts immediately.. does this help with diagnosing the problem??

Dumb question alert: Where is the accumulator??

From my post above.

Cheers, I actually found it in the end with my trusty Haynes manual. I'm hoping for a dry day tomorrow to test the accumulator. I'll let you know how it goes!

Cheers for the help

did the new pump come with a check valve in it, or did you have to swap it from the old pump (the part that screws into the pump, where the fuel line attaches)

also worth going thru all the kjet checks in my 16v thread here, might be your injectors are a bit leaky:

Hi guys I've had to drop my car off to a vw garage that can help me with this as it's above my expertise plus I don't have all the gadgets to test the fuel pressure of the Kjet system. The short story is that I'm needing to find a fuel metering head. I've looked on eBay but I can't find one for my DX engine. Does anyone know where I can find one secondhand or reconditioned?

Thanks guys
