S1 1.6 Carb to DX injection wiring

Post

I've recently obtained a rebuilt '83 DX engine for my 1976 Golf. I was intending to just plug the injector holes and run a weber, but am now seriously considering to convert it to injection and be done with it. What puts me off really is the electrical side of it, as I'm not sure how complicated it is to adapt the DX loom to my car. I know there's a fuel pump relay involved, but that's about it lol. I already have the new TCI loom though, straight forward that one.

According to other posts, it's possible to adapt a DX engine loom to fit the S1 bullet style fusebox I have, but is this the easiest way? How big of a job is it really? Or am I better off finding a late mk1 fusebox and adapt the dashloom etc to fit? Any input would be helpful. Thanks

if your DX engien loom is good then if it was me I would convert the car to later ce1 fusebox, though its going to take a bit of work. the dash plugs are mostly different, plus unless you get a cabrio loom the rear lights are different too and cab loom wont have rear wiper motor either.

to convert the dx loom to original fusebx isnt tooo bad, as tbh the kjet wiring is all separate from the fusebox anyway, and you'll want to mount the fuel relay above the fusebox too since when fitted to the fusebox it tends to burn out the pump power pin.

you may need to rewire the coil power, if your old points ignition coil power wire is purple/white that wont work on the new DX coil

Yes I decided to stick with the old fuse box and keep it simple, even though its garbage.. I will wire the relay separate as you say, and found a guy who's gonna taylor a new DX loom to fit my fuse box.

I do have points with a resistor wire to the coil originally. Is it just a matter of running a fresh normal wire in place of the resistor wire?

Also, would you know if the relay in the photo is the rev limiting type, or do I need the rev limiting rotor?

Thank you

yeah remove the old purple/white and replace with normal copper wire, if your loom builder knows what he is doing then this is easy peasy. new fusebox pins are available, and removal tool is cheap ;)

with the fuel relay ceramic fusebox dont have a limiter in instead its on the rotor arm. if you want a relay with a limiter go for a later CE1 type, and use a fuse inline. If you find VW fuse & relay holders they clip on top of the ceramic fusebox. Those again are available from VW or pinch from scrappy, I always have a decent supply of them for my loom builds :)

Great, thanks! Yeah he's only using OEM stuff, even the coloured junior contacts. Hopefully it'll be plug and play..

cool, just be sure to tell him if you want the CE1 type fuel relay as you need a different relay socket, plus add a fuse as I say
