Mk3 wiper motor problems (again)

Post

Hi, I'm in the middle of doing a swap to a mk3 wiper motor on my '88 Caddy. After installing I'm finding that the wiper fuse (15A number 11) is blowing instantly when I select slow wipe or intermittent wipe. If I flick straight up to fast wipe then it works.

I have hot wired the motor from the battery to check it works on both speeds. I have checked continuity of wiring from stalk to fuse box and from fuse box to motor plug and all is ok.  I have tried several different '18' relays and '99' relays.

I'm using the multiplug from the mk3 golf with wiring connected to the original wiring matching the colours. Is this correct, I'm assuming the colours will be standard across the vw range?

I have 12V on the black/grey wire at all times. In slow wipe I also have 12V on the green wire. Fast wipe I have 12V on the green/yellow wire.  On intermittent I have 12V on green and green/black wire. From looking at wiring diagrams this doesn't seem right, on slow wipe should I have 12V on the green/black rather than the green? Can anyone clarify the function of each wire colour?

Thanks for help, at the moment it looks like a problem with the fuse box or the stalk.

(Note that I swapped out the original motor as it only worked on fast speed - even when hot wired from the battery, it still didn't work on the slow speed.)

I would be leaning to the relay over the switch.  Why?  Because it works in High but not low or intermittent.
You might need the #99 relay programmable from the mk3.

Ok, so looks like I've got this sorted now. Looking at wiper wiring diagrams from more 'modern' cars (such as the mk3 golf, passat and T4 transporter) the wires for the two wiper speeds are the green/yellow and green/black. However looking at diagram for the mk1 in the back of my Haynes manual, the two wiper speeds are the green/yellow and green.

So, I swapped round the green and the green/black wires in the wiper motor multiplug and it's all working perfectly :)
