ive done this in the past….the very past.

cant remember what i need and not done it on a golf before.

1.3 driver GF engine 1983

want to install a rocker switch under steering column / dash area.
so i can manually switch on the fan if and when i want but still have it function with the car thermo switch.

wheres the best place to splice/run the wires?

cheers guys

i pressed the little red button

All the thermo switch does is complete the earth/ground circuit so the fan cut in, so all you need to do is splice in another brown earth cable from the fan earth cable run it to your underdash switch and run the other side of the switch to ground.

the thermoswitch switches the live, the earth goes straight to the battery earth cable.

best way is to mount a relay to handle it, and trigger that from your switch. that way you dont need a high amp switch to take the load

but there realy is no need, just make sure all the parts work properly with good quality parts and leave it as VW intended

Well as I have been looking at Schematics a lot trying to connect a Cabriolet unknown year to a 83 Westy GTI Rabbit……, it seems like the early VW's Golfs and such used switched earths alot, but in 80, they changed and started switching the 12V+….. Doh.

The only thing I know for sure is that the Wires are colored on the 70 Golf to the blower motor that carried over to the 90's… but the other side of the motor connector is totally different…. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.
