Fault on temperature gauge.

Post

I've now finished the loom (s) installs and have a few problems.
The temperature gauge in the clocks housing goes straight up to 2/3rd's and then creeps up to 7/8th's over the course of a couple of mins so I've ordered a new sender but it was okay before the new loom and dash went in. Also the red temperature warning led flashes constantly as soon as the ignition is switched on.

Any thoughts folks?

Should flash with ignition on and then stop when engine started.

Flashing red when engine running is also a warning for the low water level in the expansion tank, not just over heating. Check the wiring and sender (and water level!)

Sorry, I should have said it has a 1.8T 20v and no expansion tank.

But the expansion tank wires will need sorting (ie shorting together) so it thinks there water there.

Where on the loom?  There are a few connectors close the the brake master cylinder that I don't have a home for and there is a large bracket on the inner wing close so would that have been for the tank maybe?

My resource says blue/red wire for low coolant level and all I can see at the moment are these but I think they might be side repeaters and front fog light.
It a CE2 loom out of a 1991 MK2 EAF0AF7A-B081-45DC-AE91-E66295B90B61.jpeg

I've looked and it seems to be the plug C at the fusebox and pins 5 and 8 so I could just short them there rather than hunting for them in the loom?

It isn't really a short, it is a resistive value, and I don't remember the resistance value…. But it isn't a direct short.

Cheers for the heads up.

Guessing that means the old loom has a resistor buried in it somewhere or a connector with a resistor in it?

I've looked over the old loom (pre CE1 bulit fuse type) and can't find anything, any idea what colour it would be on that loom?
The Blue/red goes from the large flat plug that plugs into the clocks housing and the other end is in to a blue square fuse board plug.

Pete M, I thought you had a different fuse box and instrument cluster compared to a standard Mk1 golf?

If you edit your details you can put the info in your signature like engine code etc so you don't have to say what engine etc you have every time you post and stops any confusion.

Yeah, I've installed a MK2 dash and complete loom, the one I removed was a bullet fuse type, I still have it so went and checked through it but can't see anything obvious.

This all came about when I tried to remove an alarm and the loom started to fall to pieces so I was forced to change it.

yes short those 2 pins together on plug C. its how poverty spec CE2 cars without a coolant level sensor rolled off the production line :)

dead short, its just a small loop of wire between the pins.

shorting the pins also works fine for CE1, but for those you would just pull the relay out to make it like a poverty spec.

Cheers Guys,
Put a short across the wire and flashing has stopped 👍

Just for grins, I had to replace my Res Jug.  Si I decided to place the sensor in a pot of anti-freeze 50/50 and it ohmed open, not a short….didn't try it in water….

Just an interesting observation to add to the unknown….
I suspect that it is a current thing vs a voltage thing….

legend has it the system is sensitive enough to tell if there isnt enough anti-freeze in it, so this would support what you say…

but yeah in short to fool the CE2 system into thinking everything is ok, you just short the pins and it shuts up.

for CE1, simply remove the relay :)
