Brake Lights Stuck on - Please advise

Post

Hi All,

Just getting the Mk1 (82' GTi 1.6) MOT ready and had to replace a couple of blown (continental) fuses.

Replaced fuse 6 and now my brake lights are stuck on!!

I've removed the fuse box, cleaned all the connections and refitted, then I removed the rear light boards, cleaned all the connections and refitted along with the earth inside the boot, followed by cleaning the connections on the brake light switches…..

Please help as I'm about to give up and give it to VW to sort in-line with the MOT.

Cheers
Paul

Have you checked your brake light switch?

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

I cleaned the connections on either side of the brake resovoir yet didn't remove the switches.

Should I just replace them both?

I suppose I should of been more specific.

Use a DVOM and measure the resistance, which ever one is 0 ohms that is the bad boy and is stuck.

Many thanks for the advice

Unfortunately, I don't have any electrical testing equipment at the moment, so I will give it to VW to work out which one is faulty.

Thanks again

A 5 dollar dvom off of ebay, would save you 59lbs/hr.

Just saying.

Unplug both connectors, if the brake lights go out, plug one back in at a time, the one that turns them back on is the bad one.  Yes really as easy as that.

Hahaha, never thought of that….. and the most basic fault finding method, what a lemon!

There's me wasting hours cleaning the connections on the fuse box first…. but at least I now know that the fuse box connections are good.

Thanks for your help
