Will a 243 x 175 x  190 mm fit with the extra 15mm?

Doesn't seem that much higher.

Yeah, I have an 075 (243x175x175).

Just wondering if I can squeeze a slightly taller one in there.

*edit*
027 is the size, I believe.

Surely someone has tried fitting one of these in a mk1.

Well, I've done some very scientific experiments…

I placed a thin (20mm ) Haynes manual on top of the battery, and was able to close the bonnet.

I then tried with the mk1 manual (30mm), and still no problem.

Next I tried them both together (50mm). I could feel contact, but was still able to close the bonnet okay.

Considering the 027 is only 15mm taller than the 075, this shouldn't be a problem.

Why do you want a taller battery?

I've just brought a 075 Yuasa battery after my last 2 Bosch batteries have only just lasted longer than the 4 year guarantee which they came with, the Yuasa battery which was on the old Honda Civic we had lasted the 10 years we owned the car so fingers crossed for the one on the Golf.

Extra CCA for the cold morning starts. Though now you mention it, the 075 Yuasa has the same CCA as the 027.

From what I have read I would rather go with a Yuasa. The Bosch are made by, and exactly the same as Varta. Only the guarantees differ.

Any cheap old battery will do… its not the cold mornings its the lack of use between drives. Unless you are using as a daily and putting amps back in via the alternator.

Every car i have has had new batteries since i bought them and all struggle if left 7 to 14 days… without a run out.  Alarms, radios, and interior lights are killers of batteries.

063 are fitted and different manufacturers.  3 mk1s, 2 mk2 roccos,1 mk2 gti, 1mk4 gti…. all same battery in so i always have 1 spare on charge.

At festivals or day trips out i always take something like this, not this brand but similar, and it starts my t25 diesel camper, and has done  3 litre diesel audis,  amazing really how light and small they are. But also use to charge satnav and phones , since majority of my cig lighter sockets are rubbish.

One thing to note if battery is completely flat remove the  negative  from battery terminal and start car with the charger only, then pop the battery terminal back on (may spark lol).. the charge from charger drains into the battery  rather than to to starter. I noticed this servicing a mini with faulty blower, the battery was low, but the jump pack would start car without battery connected, put battery and jump pack wouldn't start.

Agree so unless you are trying to start a Diesel engine in sub 30 degrees frost look at the Amp/Hr. A 80Ah+ will be better than a standard spec 45Ah. Think of it as a bath tub, the starting, radio, alarm etc emptying it and the alternator refilling it. The 45Ah will get emptied before it gets chance to be refilled,

Thanks for the thoughts guys.

My engine is 2L and kind of running in, so it needs a little motivation when it's hot or cold. I've got a diesel starter which I'll pop in at the weekend. Only things that are powered with the ignition off are CL and clock, so not much drain there.

My current battery (075) dies pretty quickly when starting in the cold, so more capacity is desired.

Yuasa are pretty much sold out everywhere at the moment. They only have the 069 which is 4Kg heaver than the 075.

So:

075
Standard

027
Tall

010
Wide

069
Wide and tall

I think the 010 would be good as it's only 2Kg heavier than standard, and almost as powerful as the 069.

I've been thinking about a boost starter thing. Might good to plumb it in so that the USB are always live, but it only tops up with the engine running. Where to put it though.

I don't think you need to plumb it in.. just have it for those days when you expect slow start wil save you and battery.  Really mines that light, its little more than multimeter.  But started mk1 today .. from flat. …. and its 2yrs old used  lots at unit as jump starter as far less messing than older bigger style boosters we used to buy.
