83 Mk1 non start

non start

I took my mk1 for mot recently.  Long story short as the tester came to take the car off the ramp it wouldn't start.
Any way I got her back and jumped the fuel pump relay and she fired up. Easy I thought.  Anyway new relay fitted and still no good.
I substituted a 53 relay so the pump ran continuously with ignition and she runs fine. I've ran some tests and found the following.
30=12v permanent supply. 87=feed to pump. 15=12v ignition switched supply. 31=earth. 1=coil. Both 12v supplies work and we had continuity from coil.
Everything tests ok.. but clearly the car isn't seeing get a signal from somewhere.
I assumed the coil? However I have continuity.!
And the Rev counter works..
I've changed the fuse box assuming it was faulty but it's made no difference. Any suggestions??
The careason was completely refurbished about 3 years ago and has been faultless save for the fuel pump seizing. I fitted a genuine bosch one and it's been fine for over 2 years.
Lastly if I manually close the contacts on the the fyellow pump relay it right runs fine until I let go.. thanks in advance Steven.

what relay have you got fitted? the 83 fusebox will be the ce1 type and its triggered by the rev counter signal from the coil as you say. there are no other connections as its all internal to the fusebox, since you repalced it you've ruled out that side as well…

check the red/black to D/26 on the fusebox, it should go straight to the coil maybe its been cut and spliced straight to the cluster wiring

FRom Cabby-info.com there is a plethora of wonky after market relays.

She has a pictorial explanation of what to look for.
Could be as easy as the incorrect relay, or sub-par relay.

Thanks chaps. I've tried 2 aftermarket relays now and no change. There is continuity between red and black wire from coil connection to fuse box. Yes rub Johnny it's ce1

what are the part numbers you're getting? GSF part number 935VG0090 is for a CE1 non-limiter type and is proven to work

Only other thing I can think of, make sure the thick brown hanging out of the white D plug is earthed properly to the 4 way white claw on the fat brown coming from the battery in the headlight loom.  This 4 way block has a thick brown out the back which needs to go to the earth claw above the fusebox

its worth adding to the above info that 321906059D, E and F are non-limiter types, and were originally used with a rotor arm which has a limiter built in. 321906059G & H have a limiter inside, and are matched with a plain rotor arm.

443906059 & 443906059A are compatible with 321906059D/E/F, and 443906059B is compatible with 321906059G. 443907385G & H are compatible with 321906059H

from my research I believe 443907385B/321906059G has a 6.5k limiter, 321906059H has a 6.3k limiter (so you want the 6.5k type if you need a rev limiter relay)

Rub Johnny you are a genius. I cleaned the thick brown earth that sits onto the multi peg above the fuse box.  Nothing really of note just a little surface corrosion. Turned the ignition and heard the pump prime and she fired up. Thanks very much for your help.

Electrics, Divorces and Good coffee, all start with good grounds…..It don't matter where it is or what kind is, then when the grounds are good things come to life.

Very true. Annoying I cleaned up the 2 into 4 ground connector but not the one to the mounting/body. Lesson learned. Many thanks again gents.
