1.8t - which loom is the best base?

Post

Any ideas

So had a good summer in the Mk1, but time to sort a couple of mechanical problems.
while there the loom which works but is a bit sketchy could do with sorting. Plan is to get a doner loom and new coil loom and try and make a new neat loom and learn a like on the way. The starting point in the base loom. But which is best to start from? The engine is a auq running oem ECU and dbw throttle on passenger side of engine throttle body. Does it make any difference which I start with auq, bam, aum or apx ete.

makes no real difference to a proper loom builder, for a novice the carb loom is slightly easier if you plan to use the fusebox socket for the fuel relay as it has a wire in d/13 for you already. can always chop up a donor plug for a ce1 pin to use on a gti main loom, or you can even buy the pins new if you got the crimp tools.

main thing is check the original engine loom carefully the oil pressure/temp wires can differ a little depending on age/donor.

for the 20v loom you want one which has the throttle body on the correct side, has VVT, and uses a wideband pre-cat lambda to match the AUM ECU. It doesnt have the EGT sensor that the BAM etc have,. but you can leave it unplugged. or even have the AUM ECU re-coded to BAM spec which will then need the EGT.

When you do looming (got my start on a complete re-wire of a 1958 AH Sprite MK1.)  I learned a Solder connection and heat shrink beats the heck out of a bad crimped one.

When using Crimps, get a proper tool.
Use sheathings and heatshrink…. when you can or have to Stagger your slices, as they lay better….

Measure twice, cut but once.
Don't think that 300 meters of electrical tape will make it a better connection.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Thanks for the feedback, hadn't planned on changing the Mk1 gti loom just try and tidy it up a little for now.
As to the 1.8T side, the coilpacks loom is showing signs of cracking. So need to look at this first.
So looks like I should be looking for a aum or auq doner loom with vvt, of a car with n/s throttle body.
Is there an way of identifying if the throttle body is a N/S set up when buying with little detail of the car the loom may have been removed from?

I've read the link attach a couple times before. Great bit of info. Guess I'll been reading it a lot more.

Are there any good wiring diagrams on the net for the 1.8t AUQ for reference?
.
cheers

I meant the engine loom section, which you'll be splicing into the 20v loom for your plug n play loom. the rest of the car looms are left alone unless they need repair, since its a GTI loom the fuel pump wiring is in there as well so 1 less job to worry about :)

if its just the coilpack section which is bad you can buy a repair loom from VW which replaces it right back to the ecu, relatively easy job.  most DBW looms will be the same so its probably not worth trying to source another unless your loom is in a real bad way.  Need to confirm the engien code from the donor to know what side the TB is, or just look at the loom before you buy it ;)

see my signature link, I've a couple diagrams in there ;)
