Electric hood

Hi All,

Just bought my wife a 1990 gti cabriolet. The roof isnt working. with the key in the ignition but not turned on ( hope this is right as don't havd a manual) press the switch and all I get is the relays clicking. I've disconnected the pump and dropped power across but get nothing.

Two questions if that's okay?
1. Any further check i can do to the pump? Im not sure if there's oil in it for example.
2. If knackered can you get a rebuild kit or is it a new pump? Where the best place to shop?

Thank you..

You did have the e-brake full up?

You can check the oil by looking at the level in the boot.
Left side rear behind the trunk card, there should be a round circle that you can see it through.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

If you have a multimeter you can check the output to the motor.
Plus power the pump direct from the battery to see if it runs.
Often, especially when the hood has gone porous or split at the main hinge areas moisture gets in and affects the relays.  Take each relay out in turn and clean the contacts.
Because the circuit is powered by key in only you can have a faulty ignition switch.
So try holding the hood switch down and press the key in and wiggle it slightly if it powers then it’s worn ignition switch.
But as a matter of course I’d clean the relays and all contacts.

To check the hydraulic fluid you must do this with the hood in the down position otherwise you’ll get a false reading.
To operate the hood manually turn the T screw in the pump body side anti clockwise that will mean you can move the hood by hand.
The level should sit between the Min and Max line on the reservoir housing.
I’d also pop the switch out and give that a blast of WD40 or a good contact cleaner spray..

Thanks both. I've tried the key wiggle. Lol. I have power to the pump. I tried putting power to the pump p but nothing.

I've not cleaned the switch or the relays.  I heard clicking so thought they were working. I've also not checked the fluid level. What would you top it up with?

Worst case scenario, can you buy new pumps?

I’d take the pump out and inspect it.
See if there’s anything amiss.
I’td be a case of looking out for a spare pump secondhand from someone breaking a cabby.

I had same thing when I first bought mine. Pull the relays and visual check them (I replaced them all) now you will also see (iirc) two clear/white connectors. If u pull these apart the roof will work when ever you want. With or without engine running key in or key out
