I would say cut it out weld new metal, prep the weld, body bondo as needed, prime and paint

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

You need to remove the plastic wheel arch trim to see if the rust has spread from the wheel arch or if lucky it may be just surface rust. The plastic wheel arch can rub the paint in the area and that is what can cause the rusty metal.

You car may have been repainted at some point as the stone guard on the arch looks to be body colour so you may have to be carefully removing the arch incase they painted it in place….

Might be worth going to a body shop to price up a proper repair as any quick repair at home and if you don't grind/cut out all the rust will only last a couple of years before it comes back……

Rust on rear arch

Unless you have the means to paint it yourself after the work you might as well get it done at a body shop and as you’ve asked what to do on here I’m guessing this isn’t what you do for a living

Thanks for the replies guy - i will be making a trip down the body shop to see what they can do. I dint want the rust to re appear after few years.

Part of my master plan was to do a full respray at one point….i guess this is going to have to be done sooner than later. I use the golf as a daily and with the British weather it will only get worse…..
