Rear boot won't lock as if kit doesn't fit?

Post

Hi guys,

recently bought my golf and first job was the boot wouldn’t latch. I’ve fixed that and lined up the mech but the key I’ve got won’t lock it. I just insert the key and it’s a bit like a stick in a bucket but won’t turn, any pointers or do I just strip it?

maybe the lock is wrong? did the key work before…?
you can recode the lock if you have the tumblers… or try a new lock set from the web.  ;)

I don't think it worked before, sorry I'm new to the mk1, what's the tumblers and would a new lock set be just for the boot?

https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/mk1-golf-tintop-full-lock-set-4882-p.asp tumblers / plates whatever there called ,is how to code each lock to a key..

Or buy set above change the easy 1s leaving ignition as found.. since its a bit more involved.

2 doors and boot..
Just means you have 2 keys then.. lol.

If your doors and ignition work with one key, then remove the rear lock, and re-key it to match the  ignition key.

Place the ignition key in the lock barrel and see if all the pins go flat when you insert the key.  The wafers that don't are the ones that you need to swap out.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Just to update I stripped the lock today and it turned out a couple of the wafers were just jammed and once i'd cleaned them up and regressed them I got it all working and re assembled.

It now works and I can lock the boot which is a result!
