Has anyone made a parcel shelf for a tintop?

Post

My 1983 tintop still has it's original parcelshelf in fairly good condition. I want to fit some better speakers and don't want to butcher it so I'm planning on making one from MDF or ply.Has anyone done this on a MK1?
I'd be interested in seing what you did with pictures if possible and what covering you used.
Thanks.

Many, many moons ago I used to knock up rear speaker shelves for all my mates. I used to use 12mm mdf, mount the speakers underneath (as oposed to from the top) and then cover with acoustic cloth. Granted they were just flat boards, but no one was that fussy!
I need to make a shelf for mine, and I'll probably go a similar route, maybe use thinner MDF, or maybe ply, but try and get some 'shape' (and rigidity) on the top with planed and shaped wood strips, before covering it all with acoustic carpet. Getting them to hinge open was always an issue, but then we were young so just lived with it!

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

When I was upgrading my Rabbit/Golf 4dr... I placed 6X9s on the Parcel shelf sides.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

paceman I made a few back in the day out of 12mm mdf as well but like you they were just flat pieces of board. I did make one for my M2 Cavalier hatch that was hinged that was quite impressive.
I have been told ply would be better because it's less likely to be affected by damp than mdf. I was also planning on doing it in layers to get a similar shape to the original, probably using 4.5mm ply (or whatever size it is these days). I have the angle from the rear of on original parcel shelf that I picked up a few years ago that should push over some thin ply.

I made a stealth shelf for my early Golf. Attached 6x9's to it.

I would try and mount them in the boot somewhere, I had them in the parcel shelf but they are heavy and means you can't fold seats down without messing with wires and the shelf won't sit against the seat when folded
