Felt/wool type underlay or not?

Post

Not sure whether to put the thick felt underlay on top of the sound deadening?
Any thoughts, I think the carpet will fix/it better without but it would help with the additional sound deadening and feel nicer under foot.

Pete it looks like you've done a real good job there, nice one mate but in my opinion you really need some underlay which in itself sound deadening but I'm sure you know that already.

Maybe go down the road of a high quality felt or if you're not in a rush, keep this post active because I seem to remember that there's more modern thinner materials that can do the job even better.

I'm sure we have members that when they see this post they can offer you more concrete advice (sorry for pun). ;)

Felt works well as a underlayment, the OEM trim level on the Golfs were Cost effective model Rubber mat no pad.
moderate trim, thin padding and thin carpet.  Higher trim was thicker padding, and thicker pile carpet.

The Foam Padding that they are using for Home Carpet works well, is sound deadening, and insulating.. It holds up well, and they make the stuff to be mildew proof as well.

I have seen some of the AfterMarket carpets molded and padded as a kit.  So I suspect it all depends on how your replacement carpet is equipped.  The Padding also lengthens the life of your carpet as it is a cushion to the backing of the carpet….
