Closing cabrio roof problem

Post

Hello. Can't believe I can't find this via Googling, but here goes…

I can open my mk1 cabriolet roof fine and it locks in place open. However when it comes to closing it, it takes 2 of us - one either side to push the locks down to release it, then can close it fine. Can't believe that's the only way… there must be a mechanism where 1 person can unlock and close it. Or could end up asking passers by if on my own and starts to rain! :(Probably super obvious I know son thanks for any help!

Yes that's not normal as I can release and put up my roof on my own so I guess your roof is not sitting or folding right if you have to really push it down to lock it in place then have problems releasing it.

Can you post some pics then we might see something wrong with your roof…

Thanks for quick response. Don't have a problem locking it in place it's releasing that's  the problem. Have to push down levers at either side of car to unlock and put roof back up, which works fine but only if there are 2 people as 1 can't  release both levers… arms aren't  long enough. Hope that explains it!

Usually when you unlock the hood you start with the drivers side first then move round and do the passenger side.
Does your hood spring up once released?

Gas struts probably gone then.
Once released the hood should spring up a few inches.
The same if you lower the hood it should only close so far down as the struts take the load.
If the hood just slams down then the struts are shot or as I’ve seen before missing totally.
