Arch rolling / folding

Post

Hi,

I'm in the process of rebuilding my mk1, including fitting a new rear arch.

In terms of rolling or folding arches, are there any methods of doing this without the correct tool, or absolutely bastardising the metalwork?

Thanks in advance.

Simon

If you are doing fender arch replacements, then are your fenders rolled to begin with?  As for cutting in new sheet metal from a arch replacement part there shouldn't be any need to roll the arch if yours aren't rolled to begin with…..

There are plenty of threads on the vortex to show how folks have rolled there arches to accommodate larger tires or wider rims.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Nothing is rolled yet - it's a standard shell.  But to future proof it as it were for lowering, wider wheels, I thought it better to do it now rather than post paint.

Yes it would be better to do it now rather than later.
But not knowing what you want now and using a wheel and tyre that you are going to fit may mean that you are either going to do it too much or too little and will be redoing it after paint.

Also if you roll the car with axles off or disconnected from the spindle you will need to replace the front bearings.  The bearings can be ruined by as little as 6 inches of movement with the axles out of the spindle.

Use a proper rolling tool on the rears.

My fronts were just cut off, leaving a tiny lip for some strength.

I'm sorry but I don't see the relationship between arch rolling and wheel bearings…..

I'm guessing you're not running plastic arch liners either then?

I was thinking cut the fronts, as rolling them would distort the wing.

Yeah rolling them distorts them as they're single skin.

Not running any liners or trims… not sure early cars ever even had liners.

I know my 83 has them, as I whipped them off yesterday!
